Guthrie JROTC We instill in students the values of citizenship, service to our nation, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.

The mission of JROTC is to "motivate young people to become better citizens." Guthrie High School JROTC focuses on three main teaching goals: LEADERSHIP, TEAMWORK AND SELF-DISCIPLINE. JROTC is an elective class that encourages cadets to become involved in a character development program by using goal setting and team building activities. Guthrie's JROTC is the first and oldest program in the state of Oklahoma dating back to 2 Sep 1935. Until 1967 the instructors were active duty Officers and Soldiers assigned to Guthrie High School. The JROTC program at Guthrie High School has several teams cadets may join for competition: Drill Team, Color Guard, R***e Team, Saber Team and Physical Fitness Team. These teams are open to all cadets enrolled in JROTC.

Recently, members of the '89er Battalion assisted with the Guthrie Triathlon. The triathlon is an exhilarating event that brings together athletes of all levels to challenge themselves across three disciplines: swimming, cycling, and running. The Guthrie Triathlon offers participants the opportunity to test their endurance, speed, and strategic prowess in a supportive community environment. Competitors swim through clear waters, pedal along scenic bike routes, and run through charming landscapes, making the experience as visually rewarding as it is physically demanding. The event often includes categories for various age groups and skill levels, ensuring inclusivity and encouraging participation from both seasoned triathletes and newcomers to the sport. The Guthrie Triathlon not only celebrates athletic achievement but also fosters community spirit, with local volunteers and spectators providing encouragement and support throughout the event.

Last week our freshmen conducted a leadership, communication and team building exercise called Skis. Working together, teams moved in unison a designated length in the fastest time. The exercise teaches effective communication, leadership and followership roles, and teamwork / teambuilding.

There was fun and sportsmanship between the teams as they battled to get to the finish line the fastest. The Average Joe’s came in first with a time of 37 seconds. Don’t let the name fool you, they did not take an average approach to winning. The Average Joe’s were Kristopher Withem, Dace Graves, Noah Mickelson, and William Moore.

Recently the Marksmanship team competed in the Sapulpa “First Shot” competition. Competitors fired 10 shots from three firing positions; standing, kneeling and prone.

Guthrie’s top shooter was Jesseana Holder who placed 4th overall out of 450 competitors. Congratulations to Jessie! Job well done.

We are proud of our r***e team and look forward to their accomplishments in the next competition.

On Saturday, October 3d, 15 students each from Guthrie, Northwest Classen, Tahlequah, Mustang, Douglass, Classen SAS and US Grant JROTC programs met at the Shiloh Adventure Course for a day of team building, critical thinking, problem solving, archery and testing their grit on the 40’ Faith Pole and Zip line. Fun and camaraderie was had by all.

We would like to thank Colonel (Retired) Chuck DeBellevue, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Mike Sloniker and the Air Warrior Courage Foundation for the continued support of the Guthrie JROTC program, and the great staff at Shiloh Adventures for facilitating our event.

Our 5k team ran the 9/11 Never Forget 5k in Muskogee hosted by the Air Force JROTC program. Over 80 runners recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and held a moment of silence in honor of those who lost their lives, our first responders and military servicemembers.

Our team, led by senior Ryen Duncan, place 1st overall in the team category, besting the second place team by over 10 minutes. Ryen also placed 2d in his age category.

The biggest feat was convincing LTC Brede to buy milkshakes to celebrate the victory.

In the first team photo (from L to R) are Haiden Ardoin, Ryen Ducan, Garrett Looney, Malachi Keen, Aaron Maurey.
