What have our Glacier Bay Semester students been up to during their fall break? Here's a quick sample! Everyone had an amazing dancing evening at the Strawberry Jam concert at the Gustavus Community Center, helped out the safety team at the annual Demolition Derby, prepared nagoonberry jam for our trip to Hoonah, played some soccer outside since we've had great weather, saw an incredible sunset at the Excursion Ridge, went for a day hike to see Bartlett Lake, fished for coho salmon, and enjoyed a bonfire with wild-foraged mushroom ravioli!

One of the highlights of summer for the 2026 Glacier Bay Semester students was spending nine days paddling through Glacier Bay National Park. Students learned so much about the culture and nature of Southeast Alaska, including oral traditions of the Tlingit people and their history in the bay. The trip included incredible glaciers, a day boat ride up the West Arm, and plenty of ocean wildlife, including otters, whales, sea lions, and seals. And somewhere between all the paddling and exploring, there were camping-style PB noodles too and really, really cheesy mac-and-cheese. Nine days filled with learning, adventure, and unforgettable moments in one of the most beautiful places!

Tidelines Institute has just opened applications for the second iteration of our new Teaching Fellowship! This is an opportunity for early-career educators to spend a semester exploring the field: serving part-time in a rural public K-12 school, taking a liberal arts seminar on education and pedagogy, and receiving mentorship and professional development from experienced teachers. All while living at our lovely campus in Gustavus, AK, where fellows receive room, board, and small living stipend. The fellowship runs Jan-May of 2027 and applications are due September 25th. In the final days before they depart on their nine day paddle trip through Glacier Bay National Park, you might be wondering whether our students have been savoring their final hot showers and indoor plumbing… but these pictures say otherwise! From the highs of Excursion Ridge, to the sea-level of Gustavus Point, students have been exploring every one of nature’s offerings.

The 2026 Glacier Bay Semester cohort has been making campus sing for a little over two weeks! They’ve been so busy, in fact, that we still haven’t taken a full group photo. Nevertheless, students started their class on Friendship and Democracy, hiked to a waterfall off the hydro trail, picked wild strawberries, spent time on the beach, and have begun labor in garden, maintenance (building a barn!) and kitchen.

Did you know Tidelines Institute co-founder, Zach Brown, also co-founded another organization?? Solstice Project, which was founded during a gathering at Tidelines, aims to mobilize educational institutions to lead the transition to a post-fossil fuel future.

Zach has helped organize and will be speaking at the first Solstice Project Conference, taking place from June 14-19 and hosted by Vermont Academy.

The 3rd central pillar of Tidelines Institute's educational model is self-governance. Through this pillar, students are challenged and empowered to exercise judgment and decision making over matters of immediate practical importance to each other and administration of the glacier bay semester program.
