This year for our Community Service Project, we decided to design and build a new awards podium for our CTSO. The old podium that was being used was not wide enough for all contestants of team events to stand on during the awards ceremony of our State Conference.

After creating a virtual CAD Model (pictured below) we took the measurements of each piece and created the frame. Once this was finished, we added a 1/8” sheathing around the platforms and wrapped them with red vinyl to give it a shiny and seamless appearance. The finishing touch was using our vinyl cutter to create custom text and logos to apply to the front.

We are very happy with the finished product and it was a big hit at our State Conference this year.

Thank you to Alabama SkillsUSA for allowing us to make this our program’s community service project.

This week in Mechatronics, 1st year students are completing their introduction to 3D printing unit. Students are using a web based Computer Aided Design (CAD) software called TinkerCAD to create 3D models of their names.

Once they have finished their design they have to “slice” them into individual layers using the Ultimaker Cura application.

This breaks their designs down into instructions for the 3D printers so it knows specific information about when to heat and extrude the filament and the path that it has to follow to create the design.

The 3D printer will deposit a new layer of melted filament on top of the previous layer that has been given time to cool and solidify again. Repeating this process over and over again results in a hard plastic 3-dimensional object that can be used in the real world.

Meet Rover!

Rover is the latest addition to the Mechatronics Program and is a Quadruped Robot. Rover is capable of some pretty impressive movements as well as Speech, 3D mapping using LiDAR Sensors, and can be used for Coding Education.

We’re excited to incorporate Rover into the curriculum and explore coding and custom programming with this robot!

This week in Mechatronics, senior students are exploring career fields in Robotics and Automated Manufacturing and Additive Manufacturing.

Thomas and Connor are pictured working with one of our Fanuc Robotic Arms and programming it to pick up a part and move it to the designated location.

Holly, Anthony, and Ashlee are pictured working on an engineering notebook and developing a product that will make storing plastic bags in a more efficient way. Once they are done with the design phase, they will create a 3D model of their product using CAD software, and print all required parts on one of our FDM 3D Printers

This week in Mechatronics, first year students are building their first Mobile Robots!

In this project, students will be utilizing a VEX Cortex Microcontroller to program a robot base to navigate through an obstacle course without any human intervention.

Students are using Motor Encoders to track roational movement. By calculating the circumference of the wheel, they are able to determine how far the robot will travel with one full rotation of the Encoder Disc. Using this information, they are then able to accurately program the robot to move a precise distance to navigate through the course.

Today, 1st year students completed an introductory activity to robotic programming. Robots and Computers will do exactly what you tell them to.

In this activity, the instructor is the “robot” and each student is allowed to provide one single instruction to assembling a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before going to the next student.

However, the “robot” will take their instructions very literally.

Collectively, students in the class (after many many failed attempts) successfully instructed the robot to make a PB&J.

The objective was to show that even a simple task, such as assembling a PB&J, requires very specific and detailed instructions in order to be executed flawlessly.

Anthony, a senior student in the program, is working on developing his soldering technique.

Anthony is using a flux core solder to tin the end of this wire. Once the process was complete, we took a cross section of the wire to analyze how well the solder flowed through the strands.

Students in the 1st year class are wrapping up our introductory unit on basic electricity. Today they started performance evaluations on the design and construction of a basic series circuit utilizing resistors, LED’s, and a power source.

Students were tasked with creating their own circuit diagram and perform the required calculations to ensure that the resistor and voltage values were within range to keep the components from burning out.
