Excellence has a new home at West Harrison.
We’re excited to introduce National Junior Beta Club to WHMS, giving our Hurricanes another place to be seen, challenged, celebrated, and connected.
Junior Beta recognizes students for academic achievement and character while creating opportunities for them to grow through leadership and service. At WHMS, we believe students should have spaces that call out the best in them and challenge them to use their strengths to make a difference.
📩 Today, eligible 8th grade scholars will bring home invitations to join our inaugural Junior Beta class. Membership information and next steps are enclosed.
7th graders, your opportunity is coming. Eligibility for our 7th grade scholars will be determined after the first nine weeks.
As we continue writing the WHMS story, we’re intentionally creating more places for every Hurricane to discover where they fit, what they can contribute, and how they can lead.
Because belonging isn’t simply being part of a school.
It’s knowing that at , there’s a place for you to belong, grow, and lead.

The House of Isibindi welcomes its newest members! 💚
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Marks and Director of Research & Development Dr. Williams visited , and before they left, Isibindi, the House of Courage, welcomed them home.
Because at West Harrison Middle, we believe belonging shouldn’t stop at the classroom door.
Our Houses are becoming something bigger than groups of students wearing the same color. They are communities within our community. A place to be known, connected, celebrated, and needed. And that sense of belonging extends to everyone who helps make WHMS what it is: our students, staff, families, district leaders, and community.
When we say Welcome to Our House, we mean it. 🩵🖤💚💛💙🧡

Our 7th grade scientists are putting learning into action in Mrs. Turnage’s science class! 🔬💧
Students explored the properties of water through a hands-on investigation of cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension. Using pipettes and pennies, they made predictions, tested how many drops of water a penny could hold, observed what happened, and used evidence to draw conclusions.
It’s one thing to learn a scientific concept. It’s another to see it happen right in front of you.
Hands-on learning. Scientific thinking. Hurricanes at work.

💭Why Teachers Ask Students to Explain Their Thinking
Getting the right answer is important, but teachers also ask students to explain how they got there. Explaining their thinking helps students make stronger connections, catch mistakes, and show what they truly understand.
Why it matters:
When students can explain why an answer makes sense, they’re building deeper understanding, not just memorizing a process.
📌Try this at home:
When your child gives you an answer, follow up with:
“How did you figure that out?” or “What makes you think that?”
That’s one way to Lead the Energy at home.
