Gulf Stream School

Gulf Stream School Gulf Stream School empowers children to succeed, inspires intellectual curiosity, and celebrates both effort and accomplishment.

Gulf Stream School traces its beginnings to 1938 when Ada Belle and William Johnston took polo stables in the small town of Gulf Stream, 15 miles south of Palm Beach, and founded a seasonal school for students whose families came to enjoy the pleasant winter climate. With the addition of two more polo stables from Mr. John Phipps, Gulf Stream became a boarding school which it remained for 10 years

. As the School grew and the demand for a day school became apparent, boarding was phased out. Nearly 25 years after its founding, with the Johnstons about to retire, the School was transferred to a foundation in order to safeguard its continued operation, and in 1962 its first Board of Trustees was chosen. Today the current Head of School leads a vibrant day school that serves children from many surrounding communities. The School and its campus have evolved significantly since the first seasonal students arrived in 1938. Dedicated trustees, parents, friends, and alumni have enabled the School to expand, improving its facilities with the construction of the Bernet Library, Sylvester Computer Laboratory, Sylvester Field House, Clough Chapel, classrooms, and science laboratories. Despite its growth, the School upholds many of its traditions and continues to offer a challenging academic program within a welcoming and supportive environment.

We can't say enough about how cool it is to be the "Little School by the Sea". August Summer Camp is nearly at an end, and our Lower School campers experienced one of the hallmarks of our coastal location: Sea turtle hatchlings making their way out of the sand and into the water! 🏖🐢

Meet Libbie Zimmer - our new Head of Lower and Middle School (Grades 1-8)! 🔵⚪️🏤

-Tell us a bit about yourself: Guided by a children-first philosophy, I’m a lifelong educator and have been married 29 years to a fellow teacher. I'm the proud mom of two Gen Z kids in DE and upstate NY. When not balancing work or family as a daughter and middle child, I recharge by spending time outdoors.

-When's your birthday?: October 17

-What were your favorite school subjects growing up?: Growing up, I didn't like school except for the social and athletic opportunities. It wasn't until I went to college that I started to enjoy school. I enjoyed all courses related to religion, psychology, and education.

-What makes you excited about embarking on this new chapter at Gulf Stream School?: This is the beginning of my 35th year in education and 30th year in independent schools. Each school community has offered opportunities for both personal and professional growth. My hope is to continue a meaningful journey of exploring, learning, and contributing at GSS!

-What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?: I enjoy beachcombing, bike riding, yard working, exploring new towns and villages, spending time with family, listening to live music, and reading.

-Tell us a little-known fact about yourself: I had several opportunities to talk with a former U.S. president and his wife in one of my past teaching experiences.

☀️ Meet our new Assistant Head of School, Melanie Diamond! ☀️

-Tell us a bit about yourself: Originally from the Midwest, I have the foundation of education in my blood. My mom was a Kindergarten teacher! I’ve worked as an educator for more than 25 years, and I strive to collaborate with faculty, families, and students to make learning student-centered and applicable to the real world.

-When's your birthday?: August 16

-What were your favorite school subjects growing up?: Reading, writing, and history.

-What makes you excited about embarking on this new chapter at Gulf Stream School?: Since the moment I stepped onto campus, I knew that being part of the Stingray family was the place for me. I’m thrilled to work with the GSS leadership team to support teaching and learning, and more importantly, to work directly with students and families.

-What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?: Spending time with my family—whether it’s traveling, cooking, boating, skiing, or sharing a hot yoga class—is my favorite way to spend time. And of course, I’m a huge reader. Last year, I read 60 books!

-Tell us a little-known fact about yourself: I spent five months helping to run a safari camp in Zambia.
