It was a navy blue sunset and a cotton candy moonrise on this crossing. I love when the moon lights the path. I especially love every great sunrise, sunset and moonrise.

SAILING AROUND THE WORLD: WATER FALL & SPIRE HIKE ON OA POU, FRENCH POLYNESIA

On Oa Pou, just south of Hiva Oa, in French Polynesia, is a beautiful waterfall and spire hike that is not for the faint of heart, have fear of heights or people that are out of shape.

Watch out for the pervy old chocolate man that loves to harass the ladies and tell dirty jokes…that being said, he makes some super fine chocolate from his cacao farm. You must pass right through his yard to stay on the trail. $6 per bar, so bring some cash, water and a love for chocolate.

The hike is pretty steep and tough on a muddy day if it’s been raining. The views are spectacular.

BRB AIRBNB: Sailing Tahuata, Marquesas, French Polynesia. Hippie Beach Bungalow

Sailing to the Island of Tahuata for the only white sand beach in the Marquesas. The anchorage was perfect, clear water, calm seas, anchor holds well, nice group of sailors and friendly locals. But, no one really lives here anymore because the French Government technically owns the beach front a good ways back into the woods.

A hippie could have a great time here. I did. Opening coconuts, picking limes, noni, breadfruit for a fire later in the evening. Stay tuned for the goat and pig hunt in the next video. The local hunters showed up after I finished filming this video.

TUAMOTUS: Beating in 10 Storms, Rudder Slip Repair Underway, Saw 4 Orcas

What a trip….

Leaving the Tuamotus atoll of Rairoa, where Kon Tiki famously landed and headed for the atoll of Makemo. Wind will be about nonexistent for 4 days after we arrive.

After avoiding 5 miles of choral head bomies, we made it out of the pass at slack tide, raised the sails and could not turn to port. Checked the rudders and starboard had slipped 30 degrees. Tie on a rope, get in the water with my pal Emil on the rudder shaft and we realigned it and were back under way in 1.5 hours.

Raising the sails up wind and turned to set a course and SPLASH! Right next to the starboard rudder is 4 orcas looking at me and playing. My heart sank. Please don’t hit my rudder. Grab a camera quick…. Well we managed to snap a few of them taking off. It was heaven.

Then it was hell… storm after storm. The wind clocked 100 degree in 12 hours. The rain slowed the wind to a crawl…6-8 knots in confused 4 ft seas made for 2-3 knots even with one motor running at a time. Then about dark. It all died. We ran one motor at a time for 60 miles, lucky to hit 3 knots sometimes.

Made it though.

Life is good.

Hey Bro! Did y’all catch anything sailing across the Pacific Ocean?

Yeah, we caught a few…

We ate real good.

Got broke off more times than I can count.

Lost $100 in lures.

Got to Nuku Hiva and got some better line and some more lures.
