DESCRIPTIONS

OUPV CAPTAINS LICENSE (6 PACK CAPTAINS LICENSE)

THE OUPV LICENSE allows the transport of up to six passengers on an uninspected vessel. Near Coastal: Allows operation of an uninspected vessel carrying up to six passengers up to 100 miles off shore. Great Lakes Endorsement: If you have 90 days of your total sea time on the Great Lakes, you will be eligible for this endorsement USGC Approved OUPV
All testing is completed with The Captain School. You DO NOT test with the Coast Guard

Certification
Upon successful completion (attendance and passing required exams), you will receive a diploma from The Captain School. Students send diploma and application to the U.S. Coast Guard REC, along with your USCG Application to receive your USCG License. (You have up to 1 year to submit your application to the Coast Guard from the date on your diploma.) Eligibility Requirements
USCG Application Age: 18 years old

Sea Experience
OUPV Inland 360 days* operating a small vessel 90 days of the 360 must be within the last 3 years. OUPV Near Coastal 360 days* operating a small vessel 90 days of the 360 must be upon near coastal waters beyond the Boundary Line. 90 days of the 360 must be within the last 3 years. * A “day” is defined as more than 4 hours away from the dock. UPGRADE TO MASTERS LICENSE 25/50/100 TON

Prerequisites
OUPV CAPTAINS LICENSE & SEA EXPERIENCE

License Description
The Masters license allows the transport of passengers on an inspected passenger vessel. These vessels must have a Certificate Of Inspection (COI) which states the number of passengers allowed and area of operation. Two types of licenses
Inland: May take passengers upon inland waters only
Near Coastal: May take passengers up to 200 miles off shore
USGC Approved Master 25/50/100 Ton Near Coastal Course
All testing is completed with The Captain School. Eligibility Requirements
USCG Application Age: 19 years old

Sea Experience
Inland Masters 25/50/100 Ton
360 day underway on navigable waters
90 days of the 360 must be within the last 3 years
Near Coastal Masters 25/50/100 Ton
720 days underway
At least 360 days must be upon near coastal or ocean waters
At least 90 days must be within the last 3 years
* A “day” is defined as 4 or more hours away from the dock

COMMERCIAL ASSISTANCE TOWING

Course Description:
The Commercial Assistance Towing Endorsement is a four hour USCG Approved towing course for a mariner holding any license. This license is strictly for assisting disabled vessels. There are no additional sea time or service requirements for a commercial assistance towing endorsement. MARINE RADIO OPERATORS PERMIT

EXAM DESCRIPTION

STCW CPR/First Aid/AED
Course Description:
This STCW CPR/First Aid/AED certification course meets U.S Coast Guard criteria. One must have a current certification in order to apply for a captains license. All CPR and first Aid cards must be current for an original and renewal of a license. The Captain School, Orange Beach, Al and Boat Tutors SW Fl offers this course in both locations or can recommend places in your area. Price $95.00

Nautical Knowledge "101" Boating Education Class

Price: $159.00 per student

(Includes use of charts and your own student manual for note taking and future quick reference. This course is a blended lecture-based/hands-on 16 hour course that is taught as a weekend course on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30-5:00. Weekday courses are offered as special or private classes. We are also happy to arrange group classes for any organizations including, boating clubs, schools, boy scouts/girl scouts, or any other organization. We can customize any schedule to meet your needs including evening or weekend classes.

Our Nautical Knowledge "101" class includes both lectures and hands-on training and covers:

a. Boat familiarization and terminology

b. Basic overview of rules of the nautical road

c. Buoy and daymarker training including intracoastal waterway familiarization

d. Chart familiarization

e. Float plan familiarization and use

f. Use of GPS and depth sounder and your magnetic compass

g. Boat handling, including general navigation training to leave the dock and arrive at the

dock without panicking. Basic line handling and securing a boat to a cleat

h. Anchoring preparation and anchoring, includes best anchoring locations and bottoms

I. Weather familiarization

j. Lifejacket familiarization and Florida Law requirements

k. Trailering your boat including preps to launch and recover from a public boat launch

l. Basic engine and trailer maintenance and troubleshooting

m. Basic fire safety, including fire extinguishers and what to do in the event of a fire

n. Use of the VHF radio including Digital Selective Calling and reporting emergencies

o. Tides and currents and sunrise/sunset

p. Boating under the influence

q. Finding marina facilities and the use of boating guides

r. Beaching your boat

s. Emergency actions while underway or ashore

t. Briefing your family or guests before leaving the dock, including your rules, collecting medical information and who to call in the event you get injured

The Captain School Gulf Shores Alabama is requesting your assistance to forward this information far and wide to any mariner who happens to be waiting on a merchant mariner, credential or merchant mariner renewal. The national maritime center has announced the following updates to allow for flexibility while waiting for renewals and is providing an update for those waiting for new licenses.
