Our kids Gi class focused on opening and passing guard: addressing grips, maintaining posture, two-on-one control, standing, stapling, and passing.
Whether they’re under mount or working inside someone’s guard, the goal is the same: remain calm, solve each problem, find an advantage, and create space to escape.
There is no escaping without emotional control. We can teach kids the movements, but they need to stay composed under pressure to use them.
Breathe. Think. Then act. This lesson extends far beyond the training mats. Our second children's class concentrated on positional sparring, integrating all the elements, and ultimately engaging in live sparring. It consistently astounds me how many programs neglect live rolling. If something cannot be executed effectively when it counts, has it truly been mastered?

Congratulations, Jack, on leveling up tonight! Our 40-minute roll was 🔥🔥🔥!

We are constantly preparing to make it work under pressure in a live scenario. The way we prepare determines the outcome.

Great start to the week at Bright! We worked on escaping bad positions like mount, with a big focus on the mental side—the emotional control it takes to stay calm under pressure and make choices that lead to recovering guard.

This is one of my favorite lessons to teach young people. Sure, we can show the mechanics and movements, but someone putting their weight across your face and chest changes things. The discomfort is real, and the immediate reaction is often to push up and get that weight off you. That’s also how you end up giving away an armbar.

If we haven’t prepared them for that feeling, can we really expect them to respond differently?

That preparation takes allowing them to struggle and fail under a safe, controlled amount of pressure. We can’t remove every difficult moment and still expect them to develop the composure to work through one.

They have to learn to breathe, accept the discomfort long enough to think, and recognize exactly where the weight is. Then they can frame the hips, create space, and begin working their escape. Sometimes they get it wrong. We coach them through it, let them try again, and give them the opportunity to improve.

Few lessons in Jiu Jitsu translate as directly into a child’s everyday life as this one. Being uncomfortable, frustrated, or overwhelmed doesn’t mean you have to react immediately. You can take a breath, understand what’s happening, and choose a response that helps you move forward.

Learning to stay calm enough to make a good decision when things aren’t going your way—that’s a skill they can carry everywhere.
