Though today is our last post, Banned Books Week will officially close out tomorrow with “Let Freedom Read Day.” So tomorrow, purchase a banned book, register to vote, call your local representative, educate yourself on book censorship cases in your area, and support your local library! Banned Books Week may be ending, but the fight to end censorship never ceases. Thank you to the staff of Sachem Public Library for reading!

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak has had one documented censorship attempt according to the OIF, but oftentimes, most censorship at public, school and college/university libraries goes unreported. Databases such as the Censorship Search Portal, created by the OIF, are designed to track and document instances of book challenges. This database is also where the information for this week’s posts was pulled from. Thank you to Rosemary Kiladitis of the Queens Public Library at Corona and Giovanna Fiorino-Iannace of the Tuckahoe Public Library for reading!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is one of many books that end up on multi-title censorship lists. Oftentimes, multiple library materials will be listed in a specific challenge, and the ALA has documented 713 total attempts in 2025 to censor library materials and services, 487 of which specifically targeted books. Thank you to Kara Thomas of the Lindenhurst Memorial Library for reading!

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros has had 33 documented censorship attempts according to the OIF. In the past five years, partisan book rating sites have facilitated many of the challenges, demonstrating a major shift away from predominantly parent and library user challenges. Oftentimes, partisan book rating sites masquerade as legitimate book reviewers, but instead they promote censorship and target books on the basis of political and religious beliefs, deeming them inappropriate, according to a report published by the OIF in 2025. Thank you to the staff of Harborfields Public Library for reading!

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas stands as the 18th more challenged book since the OIF first began documenting censorship attempts in the 1990s. The ALA established the Office for Intellectual Freedom in 1967, working to educate library workers about the importance of intellectual freedom. Thank you to Simona Torregrossa of the Mahopac Public Library and Kerstin Cruger of the Mid-Hudson Library System for reading!

The Giver by Lois Lowry has 55 documented censorship attempts according to reporting by the OIF. As censorship attempts continue to rise in the United States, some states face many more challenges, including Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Ohio. Thank you to Amanda Marro-Pendergrass of the Arkell Museum and Canajoharie Library for reading!

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson has faced 131 documented censorship attempts since its initial publication in 1999. According to PEN America, of all titles banned between July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026, 58% of those books were classified as Young Adult books, following a similar trend from challenges in previous years. More than 90% of those YA titles were fiction. Thank you to Alicia Abdul of Albany High School Library for reading!

Night by Elie Wiesel has had seven documented challenges according to the Office for Intellectual Freedom, facing a resurgence of challenges in 2025. Between 2016-2020, the number of challenged books climbed no more than a few hundred per year, but since 2021, that number has shot up into the thousands, with 2023 reporting 9,021 titles challenged, the highest number of reports recorded. Thank you to Kelly Amundson of the Lindenhurst Memorial Library for reading!
