The San Pablo neighborhood was one of the first Mexican pioneer areas in the 19th century but soon fell victim to racial discrimination and segregation. The area was cleared out to make way for ASU’s campus development in the 1950s, however, historians are now reviving the stories of San Pablo and the Mexican contributions to the development of Tempe. One of Tempe's early community leaders was Chris Sigala, who founded the Liga Protectora Latina, protecting the Hispanic community from segregation and discrimination. Arriving in Tempe in 1874, he became Tempe's constable and played an important role in the city. Calling all rock art enthusiasts! What started as an effort to control flooding in the Phoenix area led to the discovery of over 1,500 ancient petroglyphs created by Indigenous communities that have inhabited the region for centuries. The petroglyphs, now protected by ASU’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change, depict humans, animals, and abstract shapes and offer a glimpse into the stories of the past.
