As America reflects on its 250-year heritage, it is natural to consider what has made the American character so unique and valuable. Likewise, as we look forward, it is essential to wonder whether that unique and valuable spirit can be maintained for another 250 years. In a stimulating talk that explores and integrates American history and mythology, Dr. Jason R. Edwards will seek to define and explain the emergence of the exceptional American identity and what needs to be done to maintain it for future generations. His provocative analysis will focus on the American frontier and the cowboys who roamed the American landscape from the range to the silver screen.

One of the most valuable outcomes of America’s founding 250 years ago is not a physical attribute, rather it was the creation of a place that permitted its citizens freedom to endeavor in “the pursuit of happiness.” In this article, Dr. Jason Edwards completes his three-part series on the American Dream by reflecting on individual freedom in the United States. He writes, “We should all be grateful to the Founding Fathers because they created a place where people can, within the bounds of moral decency of course, simply try, create, and attempt things they find value in doing.”

"Lamentably, in 2026, nearly half of Americans believe the American Dream is dead. With America having been the leader of the free world in essentially all living memories, the gloom is surprising and the cure mysterious. Both a source of pessimism and a path for the remedy lie in the country’s mythology. I mean mythology with a capital “M”—in other words, not silly, fictional stories told to amuse, but the narratives that a people use to imbue their values to the next generation. Simply put, our national storytellers have let us down.

Really, we should not be surprised by the failure. We have replaced the church with school and the family with media. For decades now, the academy has been almost solely interested in telling stories of grievance and criticism. Likewise, Hollywood and the media spin yarns of cynicism, nihilism, victimhood, and entitlement. We don’t put our heroes on pedestals anymore; we only pull them down.," writes Dr. Jason Edwards. Countdown to Independence No. 1: America at 250: The Making of the American Mind with Dr. Matthew Spalding

In June of 1776, Congress appointed five men to draft a statement of independence for the colonies. Members of the committee were: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman. Jefferson did much of the writing while Adams and Franklin suggested edits and changes. The group’s statement of independence was presented to Congress on July 2. In the afternoon of July 4, 1776, 250 years ago, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. America’s birthday.

To celebrate this historic moment, the Institute for Faith & Freedom will be counting down to July 4. We’ve taken a deep dive into our archives to find 10 memorable and special items to share with you as we prepare for America’s 250th birthday. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
