We’re working hard to take steps toward more scratch-made cooking in our school kitchens!

Our Mary Morrisson production kitchen made scratch-made pickles and ranch, and our staff are now getting them ready to be distributed to cafeterias across Groton Public Schools.

It takes planning, teamwork, and a lot of work behind the scenes to bring more homemade foods into our school meals, and we’re excited to keep building on these efforts!

We always love sharing pictures of the beautiful salads available at Fitch High School! Students can choose a salad as part of their meal, and staff are welcome to purchase them as well.

As a reminder, the district is transitioning to a cashless system at the direction of the Finance Department. While we can no longer accept cash, checks can still be submitted to Food Services to be applied to meal accounts.

Staff, if you don’t have a SchoolCafé account yet, please reach out to Food Services and we’ll be happy to help you get set up.

It was so much fun walking around the Mary Morrisson cafeteria today and watching our four-year-olds enjoy their lunch!

The pizza was definitely a hit, and most students were eager to eat it right away. Many were a little hesitant to try the salad, but were certainly some students who jumped right in!

This is why we love serving a familiar favorite like pizza alongside something that may be less familiar, like salad. The more often students see a new food on their plate, the more comfortable they become with it. And when they see their friends trying it, that can encourage them to take that first bite, too.

By the end of the school year, we may have a whole cafeteria full of preschoolers who love salad! PreK parents, please report back at the end of the year 😁

Pizza Friday at Mystic River!

Mystic River did a fantastic job today offering a nice variety of pizzas, including this colorful veggie pizza!

At our elementary schools, we’ll be offering different varieties of pizza on Fridays to see which options our students enjoy the most. Take a look at the pretty salads and rainbow of fruits and veggies too!

Great job, Mystic River, on a delicious Friday lunch!

We've decided that Fridays in the Northeast Academy cafeteria are now Farm to School Fridays!

Our crew, Tova, Heather and Cindy, look fabulous in their Farm to School gear and are ready to celebrate local food every Friday. We’ll make sure they’re stocked with plenty of local produce to match the theme!

Local produce made its way onto the lunch trays at Catherine Kolnaski Elementary School today!

Students enjoyed roasted green beans from The Daily Market Farm in Waterford and roasted squash from Whittle’s Farm in Mystic, served alongside today’s grilled cheese, smile fries, and fresh vegetables with our house-made ranch, made right here in our Mary Morrisson production kitchen.

We especially love that The Daily Market Farm is run by a parent of a Mystic River Magnet School student. Supporting local farms is even more meaningful when those connections are right here within our school community.

We’re always looking for opportunities to add fresh, local ingredients to our school meals whenever we can. We love supporting our local farmers and bringing a little bit of Connecticut agriculture to our students’ trays!

How cute is this artwork in the Northeast Academy cafeteria?

Art teacher Kim Menacho created this colorful fruit picture to help students make healthy choices at breakfast and lunch. We love seeing creativity make its way into the cafeteria and finding fun ways to encourage our students to try nutritious foods!

Thank you, Kim, for helping make healthy choices a little more fun!

Tomorrow is a very special day for Groton Public Schools as we officially welcome our newest students to the Mary Morrisson Early Childhood Center for the very first time!

Today’s Open House gave students and families the opportunity to explore their new school, become familiar with the building, meet staff, and get excited for the first day. Food Services was happy to be part of the celebration alongside teachers, administration, nursing, Tree House, custodians, and everyone who helped make today such a welcoming experience for our new families.

Bill from Farm to School introduced our newest Groton Public Schools students to the hydroponics at Mary Morrisson, where we are currently growing spinach and basil. Danielle and Juan prepared grilled cheese sandwiches so our new students could sample some of the food they will be served later this week. Students also had the chance to visit the cafeteria and see where their classes will be sitting during mealtimes.

We were also proud to send each new family home with a bag of fresh, local produce. The bags included corn, potatoes and squash from Whittle’s in Mystic, green beans from The Daily Market in Waterford, and hydroponic lettuce from Maple Lane Farm in Preston.

These 150 produce bags were made possible through a generous donation from Groton Utilities and the City of Groton. We are grateful for their continued support of our Farm to School program and Groton Public Schools, and for their commitment to bringing fresh, local food to our students and families.

It was a wonderful day filled with new faces, new connections and lots of excitement. We are so proud to be part of this new beginning and can’t wait to welcome our newest students to Mary Morrisson tomorrow!

We’re looking forward to welcoming our students back to our cafeterias on Monday!

Before we begin a new school year, we want to recognize the hard work of our summer meals staff. While school was out, our team worked to ensure children in our community continued to have access to nutritious meals.

This summer, we’ve served 31,988 free meals to children in our community!

Thank you to our summer meals team for your dedication and commitment to keeping our kids fed all summer long. We’re proud of the impact we've made and excited to see our students back on Monday!

It’s a busy week for the staff at Groton Public Schools as we prepare to welcome students back next week. Today was our annual Back-to-School Training for Food Services, and it was a great day of learning, teamwork, and inspiration.

We gathered at Mary Morrison to review new regulations and updates for the coming school year. We also enjoyed an inspiring presentation on happiness from a fellow Food Service Director, who reminded us of the importance of bringing positivity into our work each day.

Ledge Light provided our team with an informative food safety refresher, including a discussion about Cyclospora (cyclosporiasis), a foodborne illness that can be associated with fresh produce, including leafy greens such as lettuce. The training also covered important food safety best practices and was followed by a great question-and-answer session with our team.

After lunch, we welcomed Becky Fahey, UConn Extension’s Southeast Region Farm to School Coordinator, and Dawn Crayco, Visiting Associate Extension Educator, for a fun and inspiring Farm to School presentation. They shared creative ideas for showcasing local foods on the lunch line and encouraging students to try new foods. We tried some new combinations ourselves, including cantaloupe with thyme, which was delicious, and chimichurri tomatillos, which were a big hit with the team!

We left feeling inspired and excited to bring new, fresh ideas into our cafeterias this school year. Most of all, it was wonderful to see the whole Food Services team together. We’re looking forward to a great year!
