From Knight to Twin!

University Liggett School alumnus Kurt Barr '22 has signed with the Minnesota Twins as an undrafted free agent following a standout career at the University of Michigan.

A dominant pitcher throughout his four seasons with the Wolverines, Barr earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors twice and capped his senior season by setting Michigan's senior strikeout record with 105 strikeouts. He also received multiple Academic All-Big Ten honors, reflecting the excellence he demonstrated both on the mound and in the classroom.

At ULS, Barr was part of a proud baseball tradition built on hard work, discipline and championship expectations. His journey from Knight to professional baseball is the latest example of the talent developed through one of Michigan's premier high school baseball programs.

Congratulations, Kurt, on this incredible achievement. We can't wait to see where your professional career takes you.

Congratulations to Ava Noecker '27 on being named the 2026 Detroit Jazz Festival Youth Vocal Jazz Competition Grand Prize Winner!

Selected through a blind audition process and a live final performance, Ava impressed the judges with her artistry, creativity, and originality. She'll take the stage at this year's Detroit Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend — one of the world's premier jazz festivals.

What makes this achievement especially remarkable is Ava's fearless musicianship. Her willingness to take artistic risks, trust the moment, and make each performance her own embodies what great jazz is all about.

Congratulations, Ava!

One family's connection to University Liggett School has grown into generations of students, graduates, friendships, and memories.

Beginning with one alumna and continuing through children and grandchildren, the Birgbauer family reflects what makes the ULS community so special: when families find a place that inspires lifelong learning and lasting relationships, they return again and again.

That's the power of a ULS education — and a ULS legacy.

Long before today's students walked these halls, one member of the Wood family began a tradition that spans nearly a century.

Across four generations, the Wood family has returned to University Liggett School and its predecessor schools, each choosing the same community, values, and commitment to academic excellence for the next generation.

Some traditions don't just last — they grow stronger with time.

Please join us in welcoming Michael Hervey, as our new Head of Middle School.

Mr. Hervey comes to ULS from Avenues: The World School in New York City, where he served as Dean of Students. His experience also includes working as a school counselor and elementary teacher at Waialae Elementary School in Honolulu, as well as roles with Teach For America and Cincinnati State STEM Academy.

A Midwest native, Mr. Hervey holds a master’s degree in school counseling from the University of Montana and a bachelor’s degree in educational psychology from Miami University. His relationship-centered approach to leadership and belief that every student should feel seen, heard and valued make him a natural fit for the ULS community.

Welcome to ULS, Michael!
