Reading throughout childhood stimulates the development of language skills - the larger the child’s vocabulary will be, and the better the educational outcomes will be later in life.

What better time to slow down and encourage reading than during the summer?!

Need some ideas? Our friends at Griswold Public Library have lots of fun reading and book-related activities happening this summer.

20 Minute Reading
Readers are always welcome to read for 20 minutes and earn a snack. We will keep track of these readers and have a regular drawing of participants.

Story Times at 10:30am
These times are intended for 0-3 year old kids, however, all children are welcome to attend! Monica from Parents as Teachers will be at the library with a story and activity on the following dates:

Earlier this year, the Griswold Community School District was awarded an $11,407 grant through the Iowa Farm to School program, providing new opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning while increasing access to fresh, locally grown produce. The grant is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Patrick Leahy Farm to School State Agency Formula Grant and awarded by the Iowa Department of Education!

Griswold CSD was one of just seven Iowa schools selected to receive funding through this grant cycle. The Iowa Farm to School program is designed to connect students with local food systems through three core components: education, school gardens, and local food procurement. The goal is to help students better understand where food comes from while increasing access to fresh, healthy foods in school meal programs.

Students are already seeing the benefits of Farm to School learning. One example occurred this spring, when some of our Food and Consumer Sciences students prepared a lesson and then visited a first-grade classroom to teach students how hydroponic systems work and how plants grow without soil. The first graders then got to sample fresh mint, basil and romaine lettuce grown right here in our building.

REMINDER - Tomorrow is Track & Field Day!

K-2ND GRADE: 9:30-11:30am
3RD-5TH GRADE: 12:15-2:15pm

K-5 COLOR RUN: 2:30pm (Make sure your child is wearing a white shirt that you don't mind becoming tie-dye.)

If you plan on attending the activities and want to take your child home after the color run, you must check out with your child's teacher.
