TALK: Radical Empathy Disrupts Entitlement

ABOUT: Béalleka graduated from Grinnell College in 1995 with a degree in English and GWSS. A visibly raced and gendered veteran storyteller in Portland, Oregon – the whitest urban center in the U.S. – Béalleka also facilitates “Self-Care as Resistance,” or SCARS, a seminar she co-created for Black women’s survival in predominately white spaces. She currently resides in New Mexico where she’s writing a memoir. At our 2018 conference, Béalleka plans to share her talk, “Radical Empathy Disrupts Entitlement," which will address the importance of seeing people beyond their conventional categories.

ABOUT: Sam graduated from Grinnell College in 2014 with a degree in Political Science. After leaving Grinnell, Sam worked as a special education aide, resource specialist, and teacher before deciding to return to school and earn a Master’s Degree in Urban Education with a concentration in Policy and Administration. During this year’s conference, he will share his talk, “When School is the Only Safe Space," which will underscore the impact of current political events on the mental development of children in the classroom.

TALK: Deaf is just another reality.

ABOUT: Jody graduated from Grinnell College in 1967 with a degree in American Studies. Having grown up as the only member of her family with hearing, Jody chose to dedicate her career to working with the deaf community. Specifically, she has worked with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and with Texas Children’s Hospital's burgeoning cochlear implant program as an Education Specialist and Coordinator. In this year’s TEDxGrinnellCollege event, she will give her talk entitled “Deaf is just another reality”.

TALK: Growing New Roots: Exploring an Authentic American Orchestral Repertoire

ABOUT: Lucinda graduated from Grinnell College in 1976 with a degree in Theatre Arts. She went on to attend the New England Conservatory, where she graduated with a master’s degree in musical education and jazz arranging. She is currently the artistic director at Commonwealth Orchestra Outreach Project. In this year’s TEDxGrinnellCollege conference, Lucinda will share her talk, “Growing New Roots: Exploring an Authentic American Orchestral Repertoire," during which she will discuss how orchestras can better represent the communities they perform for.
