Some good news

Big moment for Iowa robotics!

Dubuque’s FIRST Robotics Competition Team Servos Strike Back members Ella M. and Cole G. had the honor of standing with Governor Kim Reynolds as she signed SF278 into law — officially recognizing robotics teams like ours as a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) and as a state-recognized school activity.

This bill opens the door to federal funding for robotics teams across Iowa — a huge win for STEM education and student innovation. 🙌

We’re incredibly proud to have played a role in spreading the word and meeting with legislators to help make this happen.

Exciting news for Iowa’s robotics programs!

Did you know that there are two bills in the Iowa Legislature right now? Senate File 61 and its companion bill, HF 204, are set to transform STEM education across our schools.

Here’s what these bills mean for our community:

• Enhanced Educational Support:
The Iowa Department of Education will provide technical assistance and resources to help schools establish and run robotics clubs and Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO).

• Access to Federal Funding:
By formally recognizing robotics programs as CTSOs, schools could unlock federal funds designed to support career and technical education, ensuring long-term sustainability.

• Expanded STEM Opportunities:
More students will gain hands-on experience with robotics—paving the way for future careers in technology, engineering, and beyond.

• Unified Effort:
With Senate File 61 in the Senate and its companion bill, HF 204, in the House, Iowa is showing a united commitment to enhancing robotics education and strengthening our STEM ecosystem.

We are so appreciative of all the presenters at the 7th and 8th-grade career fair for taking time out of their busy schedules to inspire and motivate our students. Your impact is immeasurable and we are honored to have had you with us today!

We enjoyed a unique opportunity this morning to present at the Grinnell Middle School annual Career Fair to promote careers in STEM and related fields.
7th and 8th grade students rotated among the different booth areas. Our team members built many great connections.

We were thrilled to have 23 8th graders indicate interest in joining our team for the 24-25 season at the high school activity fair. Thank you to Abigail, Wolfgang, Ian, and Dash for working the event on behalf of the team. We are still looking for more current high school students to join, as well.

We are a STEM-based hands-on after-school activity, working year-round to create great learning experiences for students. This includes participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition, which runs from January through March.

We do not receive funding from the school district, but are supported by wonderful community partners that see value in their investment. Our team mentors are all volunteers- we are always looking for more to help out. Our adults sometimes grow just as much as our team members.

We just finished sharing, demonstrating, and having fun with the GMS Girls Who Code club, an after school program led by computer science students from Grinnell College.

It was a treat to help support the program and draw more interest in STEM, particularly computer science for girls

You will notice that our field element, the orange object loaded in the robot, is looking a little chewed up. It leaves behind what our team members refer to as Cheeto dust. This is a reflection of the hours of the drive time our team members have had since the Iowa Regional. The robot will get a break as it is displayed in the middle school library for a few days.

Our 2024 season of outreach activities continues

We 3D printed magnetic cord keepers to give away to our teachers. It’s a small way to showcase what we have been up to and yet another way to recognize our partners. Over the next couple weeks, we will have them in every building.

They do a pretty good job at holding lollipops, too

There are many wonderful student projects here to see at the GHS Reverse Career Fair. This event is open to the public
