Dollars for Scholars does so MUCH for our students!

In an effort to create more awareness of what Grinnell-Newburg Dollars for Scholars does in our community, over the next several weeks, we will be highlighting our board members. First up is our 2023 President Lori Schoh. Like or follow our page if you want to know more about our board and what DFS does for our Grinnell High School graduates.

Lori Schoh has been a Grinnellian her entire life. Lori has served on the Dollars for Scholars board since 2017. Lori previously served as Vice President, Lori was elected as president this year and she truly appreciates the support from previous leaders. Lori also sits on the board of the Mental Health Consortium for Poweshiek County and previously served as Vice President on the GHS Alumni Associations board. Lori is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and recently opened her own private practice in Grinnell called: Mental Health Lab, PLLC. She is happy to be a part of the two boards that match her personal goals and beliefs of contributing towards hometown success. Lori knows that college is expensive. Lori believes in helping our Grinnell Senior students achieve their educational goals and to bring awareness about scholarship funding to help decrease college expenses. This contributes towards our student’s higher education or trade goals and will reduce the mental health stress of worrying so much about academic finances. Lori hopes this will promote a better overall community contribution and higher self-fulfillment in life.

Today we invited back a few of our alumni over the last couple of years to speak with our current juniors and seniors about transitioning after high school. We invited Mary Hovenga (20) who attended MCC in the Lineman program, Ashlee Staerk (21) who attends Iowa State Univerisity, Davis Hamilton (21) who attends Lake Forest, and Jarrett Rose (19) who attends Macalester. It is always great to see our alumni and hear about their experiences after Grinnell High School. Mr. Stubbs and Ms. Pearce are always so proud of our students and their accomplishments.

Hello, Senior Parents and Students!!!

The counseling office wanted to send out a quick note in regards to the upcoming scholarship season for seniors. Ms. Pearce is busy getting scholarships updated and listed on the Counseling Scholarship site (https://sites.google.com/grinnell-k12.org/ghscounseling/home/scholarships/scholarship-listing). This site is updated almost daily and is where all the local and community scholarships are listed along with some national scholarships. Another site that we use often with our students is called Fast Web or www.fastweb.com, it is a scholarship search site that is nationwide. Very handy.

The last thing is to remind students and let parents know that Ms. Pearce will be holding a scholarship workshop for seniors on January 15th in the Media Center from 9:00 to 3:00 pm. We need students to sign themselves up for this, each student will get an individualized list of scholarships they should complete and get one on one help that day! It's a long day but very rewarding! Students can go to this link to sign up! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1x562UCKxqHUCv29X6rT99IzkLHFyIbORXu5AjNiy4wQ/edit?usp=sharing) It is only editable for the seniors, so parent's please have your students sign themselves up!

Fastweb offers students an easy and secure way to find and apply for scholarships. Quickly browse thousands of scholarships by a variety of themes, major or interest, unique situations and more.

Last Friday we took part in Day. We need to encourage everyone to talk to students about why it’s important to apply to a postsecondary institution. Teachers donned their college gear and joined the American College Application Campaign (ACAC) to rally students and let them know that college is worth the fears about the application process. We added a few staff and their wise words!

What if you could inspire students across the country to apply to college?

Day celebrates the college application season by sharing supportive and motivating messages on social media about the importance of applying to college – a critical and necessary step on the journey to postsecondary education.
