With a total of 15 APPLICANTS, and a round of 5 incredibly strong interviews, we are so proud to introduce our brand new color guard designer and choreographer, Niko!

Nikolas Matsamura is a performer, choreographer, designer, and educator in the Los Angeles area. His love for music began at a young age playing flute and accelerated after joining his high school's marching band program. He was then dared to join color guard and ultimately fell in love with the activity. He marched at ICON Winter Guard for three years and proceeded to help ICON win WGI Independent A Class in 2019. He has since been with the Santa Clara Vanguard color guard since 2018, becoming a DCI world champion at the age of seventeen.

This two-time world champion has taught at multiple schools in the LA area including James Monroe High School, Van Nuys High School, and Oak Park High School. He encourages his students to be dedicated to their craft, to love what they do, and most importantly have fun at the end of the day. As directors of these schools, Nikolas has worked as their choreographer, designer, and music editor during their winter season. He also edits music for other groups in his local circuit.

Nikolas brings an incredibly fresh and modern perspective to the color guard performing arts, hoping to help transform the community to become a more healthy, positive, and effective place for all performers and spectators. With HUE, Nikolas will be our primary color guard designer, creating and conceptualizing winter guard shows for WGI as well as designing the color guard books for our marching band programs. He will also consult on the ground to work with your guard staff in order to ensure your success. He brings an incredible wealth of experience and young perspective to this position and is hungry to begin designing winter guard shows, marching band color guard books, and more.
