This large Ginger rhizome has started rooting and is sending up new growth. As you can see, there is a piece of newly growing Ginger in the upper left corner of this photo. This new piece often called an “Eye“ began to grow enough of its own/new root system, that it was able to be broken off of the main Ginger Rhizome, replanted, to begin growing on its own. The tan color of the “Eye” is a new rhizome beginning to grow.

After heavy rains during this time of the year, it is a great time to start looking in shaded woods, and along wood lines for native mushrooms. With so many different kinds in beautiful shapes and colors. You are bound to be fascinated and amazed by a part of Nature that is only seen certain times of the year. These mushroom photos were taken yesterday at the nursery.
This time lapse video of beautiful storm clouds from earlier today is a great reminder of the fluidity of movement within clouds. Due to the higher amounts of moisture often found in storm clouds, compared to the lesser amounts of moisture found in fair weather clouds.

With severe drought conditions currently here in the Upstate, growing plants has become an unwanted and stressful task, rather than a pleasure and something to help relax our inner tensions.
When conditions outdoors are extremely hot and dry, such as they currently are and have been for quite some time in our area. Some light sporadic rainfall within the course of a day does very little to help change the drought conditions along with the drought status. However contrary to many views, heavy short periods of rain within a few hours can also have little effect on drought conditions. This is mainly due to the surface of the soil being the driest of all. Many times this extremely dry/hard (clay) soil surface creates a condition named Hardpan.
When the ground is extremely dry below the surface it often does not allow water to saturate into it during a reasonable amount of time, even if the soil surface does become wet. This can cause whatever heavy rainfall to run off towards the lowest point of gravity/creeks/streams (similar to it flowing on a floor) However, if the ground had a decent amount of moisture within it below the surface 6” – 12” (below) that water would be rising up out of the soil due to the outside heat/humidity. This rising moisture from underground would be helping to keep the soil surface wet until welcomed rain comes along to help remoisten the underground, through the wet soil surface.
One of the dangers that severe drought conditions cause, besides famine, are flooding conditions. Here in the Upstate, famine is not much of a problem due to heat and drought however flooding conditions are. When there is a severe drought, any rain that falls (especially heavy rain) can flow on the hardpan into those creeks/streams, or collect in areas that would cause detrimental flooding to homeowner properties.
Living by a creek/stream is not always an option for many homeowners. If this is the case then consider planting a perennial water garden in the area where the water flows or collects around your home. There are so many native water loving plants here in the Upstate that which ever ones you chose just consider part Sun requirements/part shade requirements to plant them in. This cannot only help you and your family out, but wildlife as well. Such as native bees and hummingbirds.
