Congratulations to Prof. Doug McAbee and Art students Elena Medlin and Cathryn Burger, who won 2nd Place in the Most Creative category at this year's Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpture Contest at the Isle of Palms in Charleston on June 7th!

This sculpture required sketching, planning, and knowledge of 3D composition to position and create the sculpture within a three-hour period.

Human Services major and recent graduate, Cheyenne Straub, will take her next steps at Clemson University. In Fall 2025, she will pursue her master's in Student Affairs and Higher Education at Clemson and serve as a graduate assistant in Clemson's Bridge transfer program. She hopes to have a career in higher education and possibly Title IX work. Congratulations, Cheyenne!

"What a great night of community engagement! 🤝

This week at UCG, the Department of Psychological Science and Human Services hosted the Annual Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) training and student poster session. The ACE training equips attendees with skills to better support those impacted by traumatic and adverse experiences.

Lander students, area social work and mental health professionals, and students from local institutions (PTC, GTC, Clemson, SCC) gathered to complete the ACE training and acknowledge April as Childhood Abuse Prevention month. See some pictured below, also wearing Blue for Childhood Abuse Prevention month.

Students in the UCG-based Social Work Interventions class (and others) presented posters about issues children and families face, and community resources to assist them. Topics included child abuse prevention, child and adolescent grief, mental health stigma and crisis, addiction recovery, adult survivors of abuse, and self-care for professionals.

Special thanks to Dana Powell, M.Ed, of the Children's Trust of SC, for partnering with us again! Appreciation also goes to our student presenters, Prof. Stacey Olson, Stephanie Smith, LMSW (Carolina Family Services), Shannon Antonini, TUA Honor Society members, and others for their support of this event!

"👏 Lander's Tau Upsilon Alpha Human Services Honor Society members exemplify TUA's motto of "excellence in service to humanity." Not only do the student members excel academically in their Lander courses, but they also give back and volunteer in their local communities.

This year Lander’s TUA members chose to join the fight against food insecurity in SC and beyond. For example, Chenasia Scott, human services major (with psychology and pre-social work minors), recently assisted in leading a food drive at UCG, benefitting the AIM organization. Other TUA students have volunteered for local food banks, at Lander’s own Bear Necessities organization, and some even assisted with aid during the recent wildfires in SC.

Thank you TUA members for your excellence in service, and for representing Lander well. Special thanks to TUA president, Chloe Davis, for her leadership of the chapter's service. 🤝

TUA Honor Society is sponsored by the National Organization of Human Services. Academic excellence was on display April 24 at Lander University.

The annual awards ceremony for the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences showcased students who have been successful in the classroom during their time at Lander.

“Our students study ourselves and our society,” said Dr. Lucas McMillan, dean of the college.

“We examine both individuals and institutions, and we ask hard questions about the past, the present and the future. Our students learn and reflect upon their communities, their families, their friends and themselves. They dig deep to understand our shared history and culture. The students we honor today demonstrate persistence and curiosity. They revise and resubmit work. They understand that learning can be uncomfortable.”

This past Saturday was our 2025 Sculpture Deathmatch!

The 2025 Sculpture Deathmatch was huge in every way. More people, more teams, more chaos and more fun. This year we had 4 teams, a one person team, a guest portrait artist and a team finished in only 6 hours…all firsts for the deathmatch!

Please help us congratulate this years participants and winning team. This year's winner is Team Sunbeam Microwave and their skeleton fish! Congratulations!

What if your college education could take you beyond the classroom to ancient cities, historic landmarks and cultures you’ve only read about?

At Lander University, students have the opportunity to travel beyond Greenwood and explore the world through study abroad programs and faculty-led tours, traveling to places such as Rhodes, Greece, and Vona, Italy.

Carlos Mentley, a Spanish professor at Lander and study abroad director, said studying abroad offers students a rare opportunity “to go and see and do and touch things that otherwise you only read about or watch on a television screen.”

He added that the experience helps students realize just how large and diverse the world really is.

“The rest of the world doesn’t think like we do,” Mentley said. “A lot of times the way the rest of the world thinks is better than the way you think.”

Looking for a one-of-a-kind teapot, a handcrafted basket or a new piece of pottery that tells a story?

The Arts Center of Greenwood will host its fifth annual Earth into Art Sale on April 26, featuring work by regional artists from the Greenwood Area Studio Potters, Greenwood Artist Guild, Greenwood Woodworkers Guild and the Dolores von Rosen Basketry Guild.

Originally connected to the Heritage Trail Pottery Tour, the event began as a way for the Greenwood Area Studio Potters to demonstrate their craft, engage the public and sell their work.

Eventually, the Arts Center assumed full responsibility for the event, ensuring its future and continued growth.

The Department of Music at Lander University invites residents to attend a performance 7 p.m. April 17 by the Lander Jazz Ensemble in the Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

The Lander University Jazz Ensemble is a 20 piece big band that will be presenting a program of musical selections with a variety of grooves and contrasting moods from across the history of jazz, including music originally performed by Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Artie Shaw and others.

This concert will be director Dr. Robert Gardiner’s swan song, as he will be retiring after 23 years as professor of music at Lander.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Gardiner said. “I will miss teaching tremendously and working with Lander’s beautiful students, our amazing staff and my wonderful colleagues. It’s been a pure pleasure and will be forever grateful for the opportunity.”

In true party band of the South fashion, the Swingin’ Medallions rocked Lander University’s Finis Horne Arena Thursday to raise money for the university’s John and Jayne McElrath Memorial Scholarship for Music.

State Sen. Billy Garrett and Rep. John McCravy presented a joint resolution before the April 10 show, naming a portion of S.C. 34 — between Greenwood and Ninety Six — as the John McElrath Memorial Highway.

“It’s just tremendous that such a talented artist comes from the Greenwood area,” Garrett told the Index-Journal on Thursday afternoon by phone, speaking of Medallions founder, the late John McElrath, who died June 9, 2018. “We want to let his family know that we are certainly proud of him as a favorite son.
