We, as dental professionals, are a part of our patients’ obtaining overall health. Discussing their options, making these recommendations, and referrals will certainly benefit our patients, not only in their dental health but in their general well-being.

Myofunctional Therapy can be beneficial for children with orthodontic issues. Orthodontic issues often involve malocclusions (misalignments of the teeth and jaws) and improper oral muscle function, such as tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, or incorrect swallowing patterns. Myofunctional therapy focuses on correcting these underlying muscle dysfunctions.

By addressing the oral muscles and promoting proper tongue posture, swallowing patterns, and nasal breathing, myofunctional therapy can help in the following ways:

Improved orthodontic outcomes: Myofunctional therapy can enhance the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment by ensuring that the muscles of the face, tongue, and lips are functioning properly. This can contribute to better alignment and stability of the teeth and jaws.

Facilitated tooth movement: When the oral muscles are functioning optimally, it can aid in guiding the teeth into their correct positions, potentially reducing the need for extractions or other invasive procedures.

Retention of orthodontic results: After orthodontic treatment, myofunctional therapy can help maintain the alignment of the teeth and prevent relapse by promoting proper muscle balance and function.

Enhanced facial development: By encouraging proper oral muscle function, myofunctional therapy can positively influence facial growth and development in children, potentially leading to improved facial aesthetics.

It's important to note that myofunctional therapy is typically used in conjunction with orthodontic treatment and is not a substitute for it. A collaborative approach between a myofunctional therapist and an orthodontist can yield the best results for children with orthodontic issues.

Here's a quick tongue tie screening exercise you can try:

1. Stick out your tongue as far as possible.
2. Try to touch the tip of your nose with the tip of your tongue.
3. Open your mouth wide and say "ahh" while looking in a mirror.
4. Observe if the midline frenulum (the tissue that connects the underside of your tongue to the floor of your mouth) restricts tongue movement or appears tight.
5. Try lifting the back of your tongue to touch the roof of your mouth. Pay attention to any limitations or discomfort.

Remember, this exercise provides a basic screening and should not be considered a formal diagnosis. If you have concerns about tongue tie or suspect any difficulties related to tongue movement, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional or a specialist such as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, or a lactation consultant who is knowledgeable about tongue tie.

Tongue posture plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy airway. When the tongue rests against the roof of the mouth, it helps support the upper airway, ensuring unobstructed breathing and optimal airflow. Proper tongue posture also contributes to balanced muscle tone and the development of a spacious oral cavity. On the other hand, improper tongue posture, like mouth breathing or low tongue position, can negatively impact airway health. Developing and maintaining correct tongue posture through exercises and awareness can help optimize airway function and promote better breathing.
