California’s medical fee schedules have helped control workers’ comp costs for years.

But a new CWCI study suggests a growing share of treatment is being billed under unlisted codes outside traditional pricing controls, creating a new source of medical inflation.

Among the findings:
• Payments for unlisted professional service codes more than doubled since 2017
• Average payments for those services increased 106.7%
• Unlisted DMEPOS codes now account for more than half of all DMEPOS payments

The trend could increase pressure on policymakers to address the growing gap between fee schedules and market-rate pricing.

California’s battle over SIBTF reform just escalated.

A Senate budget proposal would tie part of the Division of Workers’ Compensation’s funding to Gov. Newsom’s proposed overhaul of the Subsequent Injuries Benefits Trust Fund.

With employer assessments rising from $35 million in 2015 to nearly $860 million today, the fight over eligibility standards, benefit calculations, and pending claims is far from over.

The move could signal that SIBTF reform negotiations will continue well beyond the June budget deadline.
