I was intimidated to start down a path of a career whose working environment I did not know I could handle. Having the opportunity to work in a large cancer institute before applying for graduate school gave me the confidence I needed to go full steam ahead into medical physics.

There are not many scholarship opportunities that I can remember as vividly as my summer with the Steamboat Foundation. It was ten weeks of serious reflection, evaluation, and transformation. This time was a gift—a chance to develop into the professional that I had always envisioned myself becoming. I thank Steamboat for taking a chance on me that summer and for keeping me on track to my goals. That summer helped me reach my present summer opportunity.

Looking back, I’m amazed how much I learned in a single summer. I learned about a new job and a new city, about medicine, finance, art, radio, architecture, media, law, education and so much more. But all this learning never felt cumbersome because I was surrounded by some of the most passionate and talented peers I’ve ever had. They made it easy, fun and entirely worthwhile.

I firmly believe that creative people are not born. They are made. The most creative people go through life welcoming new experiences, collecting more dots. And with the new dots they draw new lines. Steamboat allows – nay, requires – its scholars to live and interact together. Living with the 2011 scholars, I learned heaps about business, finance, science, medicine, media, art, life and food. I’ll be connecting those dots for the rest of my life.

"At its core, Steamboat is a catalyst--for community, self-discovery, and professional growth. It's remarkable to think that in 10 short weeks, you become such close friends with people who will--unknowingly--push and motivate and polish you in ways you never thought possible. Steamboat extended my professional ambitions and continues--with each new class--to make me want to do, give, and be more for my self and the Foundation. "
