Whitby inspires a passion for learning and empowers each child to take responsibility as an open-minded, principled citizen in a global community. 18 month - Grade 8 independent co-ed school. Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, Whitby students explored the rich diversity of the Spanish-speaking world in their classrooms through lessons and activities highlighting cultural traditions, festivals, food, music, and stories.

The celebration culminated in a special assembly, where students proudly represented different countries with their flags, shared their learning, and reflected on the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month.

We’re pleased to welcome Roseann Co***lo to Whitby as our Artist-in-Residence!

Throughout her two-week residency, students across all grade levels will explore the art of mosaic making, working with color, form, and visual storytelling through an immersive, hands-on creative experience.

As a proud partner of Greenwich Pollinator Pathway, Whitby welcomed Myra Klockenbrink to campus for an engaging presentation with our third graders on the vital role pollinators play in our ecosystem. Directly connecting to their Ecosystems unit, students explored the importance of protecting pollinators and the environments they depend on, inspiring our budding ecologists to become thoughtful stewards of the natural world.

Our second graders welcomed an educator from the Stamford Nature Center for a hands-on exploration of local Indigenous history and the important connection between communities and the land. Through artifacts and reproductions, students discovered how Indigenous Peoples used natural resources to meet their needs for food, clothing, and shelter, making meaningful connections to their “This Land Is Our Land” Unit of Inquiry.

Today, Whitby students came together for Buddy Day, a meaningful tradition designed to foster connection across grade levels.

Through our Buddy Program, older and younger students build relationships that extend beyond the classroom and across divisions. These cross-grade experiences cultivate leadership, confidence, mentorship, and a genuine sense of belonging, while creating opportunities for students of all ages to learn from one another.

It is one of the many ways Whitby intentionally builds a connected community where every student has the opportunity to lead, learn, and belong.

In science class, our 6th grade students put their creativity and collaboration skills to the test with a hands-on challenge that tasked them with moving objects from one place to another without using their hands!

With limited time and materials, students discovered that there was more than one way to solve the problem. Some found a solution quickly, while others learned from their classmates’ ideas and tried new approaches. Just like scientists, our students learned that creative thinking, perseverance, and collaboration can lead to successful solutions.

As part of our Ecosystems unit, our 3rd graders took their science learning outside! Students have been exploring how living things rely on one another to survive. To see these connections in action, we went on a trail walk by the pond using Sara Levine’s Flower Talk: How Plants Use Color to Communicate.

Students discovered that a flower’s color isn’t just decorative—it can be a secret broadcast system that attracts specific pollinators. For example, white flowers glow under moonlight to guide nocturnal moths and bats, while red flowers attract hummingbirds because most insects cannot see red.

By stopping to read at each station, students took notes on these plant-animal partnerships and saw firsthand how living organisms interact to keep their habitats thriving.

Meet Patricia, one of our dedicated Spanish teachers! Through engaging and interactive learning experiences, Patricia helps students build their Spanish language skills while developing an appreciation for the cultures and communities connected to the language.

Her classroom encourages students to communicate, take risks in their learning, and see language as a meaningful way to connect with the world around them.

We’re excited to spotlight Patricia and the passion she brings to World Language learning at Whitby!
