And before we jump in on September 5th talking about what parents need to understand about schools and what educators need to understand about families, perhaps we needed to establish this first: Neither one of us knows everything.

Education can make us impatient for evidence.

We teach something and want to see mastery. We establish an expectation and want to see behavior change. We encourage someone and hope confidence appears. We invest in a relationship and want to know the investment is making a difference.

Remaining Faithful After the Newness Wears Off

We do not honor a borrowed chair by constantly searching for the next one.

We honor it by being fully present in the one we have been entrusted to steward.

Before we decide their story…

ask one more question.

Before assuming why a student behaved a certain way, ask. Before deciding what a colleague meant, ask. Before allowing frustration to write the rest of someone’s story, ask. And when asking isn’t possible, let’s leave enough room in our hearts to say:

“There may be something here we don’t understand yet.”

Parents: educators have some things they need you to hear as we start this new school year together.

Educators: you might want to sit down with us, too.

For eight Saturdays, we’re putting down the defenses, pulling up two milk crates, and having the conversation we should have had a long time ago.

Not to decide who’s right.
Not to decide who’s to blame.
To remember who all of this is supposed to be about-

the children.

Sometimes behavior speaks before a child knows how to explain what is happening inside. Sometimes silence says something. Sometimes resistance says something. Sometimes the student who seems least interested in connection is protecting a heart that has learned not to trust it.

This doesn’t mean expectations disappear.

Grace and accountability have never been enemies.
