Today we visited the photo exhibition “Català-Roca: La lucidez de la mirada,” and then we shared and reflected on our chosen photograph on aspects of theme, cultural elements and composition. Very interesting!!

This week we met in small groups at the historic pastry shop “La Mallorquina” to experience the custom of “la merienda” while sharing the first two week experiences of living in another culture, with a host family, a big city like Madrid & taking classes at another university.

This afternoon we saw the film “Alcarràs” (Berlin Festival top prize) in Catalan with Spanish subtitles, and in class this morning students wrote on their journals and talked about their own cultural identity now that they are living in another culture(s).

Today we did what madrileños do on a Sunday morning: go to El Rastro flea market! Another culture experience on the first week! Classes at U. Nebrija start tomorrow!!

After two years of not having a program at Universidad Nebrija in Madrid, Spain, there is a group of Furmaneros this Fall 2022 ready to have a study away experience with Prof. Lourdes Manyé and Prof. Santiago Quintero. We feel fortunate and are very thankful! 💜

Congratulations to Spanish majors Julia McCabe '23, Cynthia Oliver Zavaleta '23, and Nick Curcio '22 for their Furman Engaged! presentations that featured their inspiring work at their respective internships in the Greenville area. Julia, Cynthia, and Nick described how they applied and honed their Spanish language skills and knowledge of Hispanic, Latin@, and Latinx cultures at Safe Harbor, Neighborhood Focus, and the US Attorney's Office this year.

Also, congratulations and thank you to Spanish major Katherine McCann for sending her thoughts via video from Santiago, Chile regarding her volunteer work at Safe Harbor in fall 2021.

These students are wonderful ambassadors of Furman, especially since they contributed to positive social change in our community. We are so proud of their meaningful work this year!

Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Michno for bringing the SLINKI - SLISE conference to Greenville, SC. Congratulations to junior Cynthia Oliver Zavaleta for her poster presentation "The literal and figurative 'white gaze' when speaking Spanish in Greenville, SC: Applying a raciolinguistic approach". Thank you to senior and Linguistics minor Morgen Smith for your assistance during the conference. Buen trabajo a todxs!
