Eastern AHEC We bridge healthcare and education in eastern NC by being an advanced resource for healthcare providers, from student to expert.

NC AHEC links the state’s four university health science centers, community hospitals and health agencies. Through state and local funding, this network’s goal is to help attract, retain and maintain high-quality healthcare professionals throughout North Car

We strive to be the bridge between healthcare and education in our region by positively influencing health outcomes in the region — and by adhering to our mission statement: “Eastern AHEC is an advanced resource for healthcare providers, from student to expert.”

We’ve been busy here at Eastern AHEC and there is so much to share. Let’s start by shouting out our colleagues at the ECU College of Nursing!

Earlier this year we had the pleasure of hosting Dr’s Alex Hodges, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, CNE and Michelle Skipper, DNP, FNP-BC, NHDP-BC, FAANP, FNAP on our Rural Waves podcast to talk about the importance of Climate Health and Disaster Management, then again at the Rural Health Symposium where Dr. Hodges presented on “Climate Resilience and Patient Readiness.”

According to Dr. Skipper in the August CONnection Newsletter, “These have been excellent opportunities for us to recruit the largest incoming class of Healthcare Emergency and Disaster Management - 10 students - we’ve had since the inception of the program.”

We love partnering with fellow Pirates to educate and recruit current and future rural health professionals 🩺

Registration for the 2026 Children's Services Conference is now open! We are honored to feature keynote speaker Dr. Danielle Roubiniv, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Director of the Child and Adolescent Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program (CHAAMP). Her work examines how early experiences of stress and adversity shape children’s development, and how protective factors across biological, psychological, and social domains can promote resilience.

In North Carolina, children's mental health concerns begin earlier than many realize. One in four children ages 3–17 have been diagnosed with a mental, emotional, or behavioral condition, and by middle school, almost one-third of students report feeling persistently sad or hopeless. Su***de is now one of the leading causes of death for youth ages 10–14, highlighting the urgent need for early identification and support.

As clinicians, school personnel, and behavioral health professionals, we stand at the intersection of crisis and possibility. Every interaction is a chance to build resilience and shift outcomes, even amid workforce shortages, rising demand, and systemic barriers.

Register now, and learn more ways to help young children with their mental health!
