When you’re sick with a common illness like a cold, flu, stomach bug, or fever, your body begins making antibodies to fight the infection. Those protective antibodies are passed through your breast milk to your baby.

Breastfeeding while sick can actually help:
✨ Protect your baby from getting sick
✨ Reduce the severity of illness if they do get sick
✨ Provide comfort, hydration, and nutrition
✨ Maintain your milk supply during illness

Most illnesses are spread before symptoms even begin – meaning your baby has likely already been exposed before you realized you were sick.

To help protect your little one:
✨ Wash hands often
✨ Stay hydrated and rest when possible
✨ Wear a mask if you have respiratory symptoms
✨ Continue nursing or pumping frequently

There are only a few rare situations where breastfeeding may need to pause temporarily, so always check with your healthcare provider or IBCLC if you’re unsure about medications or specific illnesses.

Your milk is powerful – even on your hardest days.

This week, we celebrate every breastfeeding journey – the joyful moments, the exhausting nights, the questions, the tears, and the incredible resilience it takes to keep going!

Breastfeeding is so much more than feeding a baby. It provides optimal nutrition, supports immune health, promotes healthy growth and development, and fosters a unique bond between parent and child. But while breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always easy.

If you’re breastfeeding today, know this:
- Every feed matters.
- Your worth is not measured in ounces.
- You are not defined by your hardest postpartum days.
- Asking for help is a sign of strength, not failure.
- You deserve support, encouragement, and compassionate care.

And if your journey looked different from what you hoped, there is grace for that, too. Every family has a unique story, and every parent deserves kindness – not comparison. Your identity isn’t found in exclusive breastfeeding, your milk supply, or how long your journey lasts.

This World Breastfeeding Week, let’s commit to creating communities where mothers feel seen, supported, and empowered to meet their breastfeeding goals. 🩷

Did you know your body creates the perfect milk for your baby at every stage? Here’s a simple breakdown:

✨ Colostrum (Days 1-3) ✨
Often called “liquid gold”, colostrum is thick, concentrated, and produced in small amounts – perfect for your newborn’s tiny stomach. It’s rich in antibodies, white blood cells, and protective factors that help coat your baby’s gut and build their first immune defenses. Colostrum also acts as a natural laxative, helping your baby pass meconium and reducing the risk of jaundice. A little goes a long way!

🩵 Transitional Milk (Days 3-14) 🩵
As your milk “comes in”, it increases in volume and changes in color and consistency. This milk supports your baby’s rapid growth and developing needs.

❕Mature Milk (2+ weeks and beyond)❕
Your milk becomes lighter and more consistent in appearance, but it’s still full of everything your baby needs – hydration, nutrients, and immune support. It continues to adjust based on your baby’s age, feeding patterns, and even illnesses.

Breast milk continues to provide immune support with antibodies that help fight everyday illnesses. It offers comfort and connection during big developmental stages, supports healthy digestion, and adapts to meet your toddler’s changing nutritional needs. Your milk is always changing to meet your baby’s needs – how amazing is that?! Every drop matters!
