In my Art II class the students had to create a self portrait using acrylic paint.
They broke down their faces using lines of the shadows to create a graphic look. That's also how they knew what shade to use as well.
They chose if they wanted to use the value scale or a monochromatic scale and they could do anything they wanted in the background of the painting.
In my Dimensional Art class the students had to create a portrait of someone they know or a famous person. They needed to use the same techniques that the other kids used as well.

This self portrait is given to my Dimensional Art, 3D class.
They have to create a self portrait using only cardboard, paper. This is one of two relief sculptures they create in my class. Everything else is an in-the-round sculpture.
Their objectives: 4 areas that have 3 layers, 1 unique item, look like themselves.

The students had to research and create a poster for a critical issue that they believed in.
We discussed different topics that are current events in the news now.
The students had to research, write, reflect, create and present the project to their class.
They need to intellectually, clearly and calmly discussed their issue and why it was important to them.
I really appreciate this art project because it helps the students learn how to talk with others without being rude or sad about it. As adults, starting a conversation and talking with others that may or may not agree with your point of views.
The kids had to look at how to make a good poster, advertising to get their message across quickly and easily. They had to use positive/negative space to create a stencil and then paint it on cardboard. Our inspiration was Banksy and street art, so we kept the look gritty. The kids had to be thoughtful of colors and how the project looked.

My Dimensional Art students learned about Claes Oldenburg's soft sculptures. And then had to be inspired to sew a Pop Art sculpture together. Pop culture in today's world of course. All the students HAND SEWED each composition! I wish I got more images of this project, but my students will be doing it again this year, so....yay!

The kids had to work with three other people to create one quarter of a portrait.
They had to choose, draw and color it separate and together to make it look as cohesive as possible.
The students used grids to help them draw then chalk pastels to color the portrait in.
The difficult part is the students get a 8x10" image printed, then cut into quarters but the final artwork is 36x40" big. So they work from a small image and make it into a bigger image. But they turn out completely cool and they love this project that I have done it two years in row.

I had my Dimensional Art students create self portraits of themselves only using cardboard, paper bags and other random materials. They needed to simplify their portrait and create everything in layers. As a matter of fact, they had to have four different areas that had three layers. It was awesome to see the cool objects they chose to use for their portraits. Such as a paper towel for a scarf, transparency paper for glasses, diamond stud for earring, etc.
This is the second relief sculpture they create for my 3D class.

The last couple of years in my 3D class I had the students start the school year by thinking in 3D. I have them, individually, make forms from paper. The students have to draw templates then cut and tape them together. Then they have to use their skills as a group and create objects that everyone can recognize using paper and tape.

My Dimensional Art students create a relief sculpture that is only out of paper and glue. They had to use the element of texture with the paper, then choose an principle of design that their artwork fit with. The kids had their options of how to manipulate their paper and if they wanted to create a piece that was abstract or realistic. After the art was created they wrote a reflection on what principle of design they used, how they created their art and why.
