🦁🦅 Learning Walks: Keeping Our Eyes on Student Learning!

At Thomas E. Kerns Elementary and Alexander Elementary, we are continuing to put our feet in classrooms, our eyes on instruction, and—most importantly—our focus on student learning.

Our Learning Walks are not about simply checking for compliance. They are about asking critical questions:

🔎 What are students learning?
🎯 Is the learning aligned to grade-level standards?
💬 Are students thinking, explaining, questioning, and engaging in meaningful work?
🧠 What scaffolds and supports ensure every student can access rigorous learning?
📈 How do teachers know students are learning—and what will they do next?

At Thomas E. Kerns, we saw strong evidence of learning targets connected to instruction, purposeful questioning, student writing and thinking, interactive supports, student explanations, and accountability through exit tickets.

At Alexander, we saw strong classroom culture, grade-level learning, student engagement, differentiation, purposeful small groups, and growing opportunities for student discourse and deeper questioning.

The next move? Go deeper. Through ILT work, PLCs, coaching, and continued Learning Walks, we will sharpen teacher clarity, success criteria, differentiation, and the gradual release of responsibility so that students increasingly own their learning.

Because transformation is not simply about what adults are doing.

It is about what students are learning, how deeply they are learning, and whether that learning is changing their trajectory.

🦁 Kerns: Wild About Learning.
🦅 Alexander: One School. One Goal.

Transformation in action. Focused on students. Focused on results.

Alexander was very well represented at the Greenville County Schools Teacher of the Year celebration this morning. Our principal, Dr. Ho**er opened the celebration as the 2026-2027 GCS Administrator of the Year. Third grade teacher, Miss Letayf, won the GCS First Class Teacher award, AND our art teacher, Mrs. Hamman was recognized as one of the GCS Top Ten teachers of the year! Wow! We are so proud of them! 🦅

This morning, we had the privilege of celebrating our 26-27 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Courtney Calvo, at the GCSD TOY breakfast. This annual event honors the incredible educators who make a difference in the lives of our students each and every day.

Congratulations to all of the 26-27 GCSD teachers. And a special congratulations to our Teacher of the Year, Ms Calvo! Thank you for your dedication, passion, and the lasting impact you have on the Tanglewood family. 💙🤍
