Soaring Beyond Limits! The Washington Center serves students between the ages of 3 to 21, pre-school through twelfth grade, with severe mental disabilities.

Most students have concurrent challenges such as blindness, deafness, or physical disabilities that require extensive specialized equipment. It is our on-going mission to ensure that each child’s needs are met, so that every child can reach his or her greatest potential.

What an amazing last week at Washington Center! 🌟

Our classrooms made the most of the beautiful weather, spending quality time together outside and discovering new ways to learn. There's something special about stepping outside the classroom doors!

Our incredible staff was treated to a delicious end-of-year luncheon where they celebrated in style—complete with an "anything but a cup" twist! 🥤✨ But the highlight? Washington Center was chosen as the recipient for Mauldin High School's 2026-2027 Spirit Week! 🎊 We are so excited and grateful for this honor!

Mark your calendars: Thursday, March 11 – Thursday, March 18 for Spirit Week activities. Let's bring the energy!

As we close out this chapter, we want to celebrate some wonderful colleagues who are moving on to new adventures:

- Principal Sheila Gentry (last day: June 30)
- Teacher Jean Ashmore
- Speech Therapists Brooke Gambill and Kym Tuckfield
- Nurse Sandy Rotan
- Paraprofessionals Lori Nestor and Neisha Waters

You will be missed! Thank you for all you've done for our Washington Center family. We wish you all the best on your next journey! 💙

Looking ahead to the 2026-2027 school year (mind blown 🤯), the first day of school is Tuesday, August 11.

Here's to a safe and fun summer, everyone! ☀️

We Did It! 🎉 Washington Center's Custom Executive Jacket is Complete!

Our talented students have finished creating a stunning custom denim jacket for ScanSource executive Becca Fox—and we couldn't be prouder of the result!

What made this project special: ✏️ Students interviewed Becca to learn her story and passions 🎨 They transformed those insights into beautiful, wearable art 🌍 The jacket will be showcased at the ScanSource Specialty Partner Conference in Nashville this August 💰 Attendees will vote with dollars, and all funds raised support community and education initiatives

From concept to completion, our students demonstrated incredible creativity, professionalism, and artistic skill. This real-world project gave them the chance to see how art can make a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.

Thank you to Becca Fox and ScanSource for this amazing partnership opportunity! We're excited to see our students' work celebrated on a national stage. 🚀

A huge Washington Center thank you to Mr. Dave Durbin! Mr. Durbin custom-built two adapted catapults, specially designed to allow our students to toss and throw! We can't wait for the chance to have a schoolwide Cornhold Tournament! We appreciate you, Mr. Durbin!

Mrs. Heather Durbin, realtor with Coldwell Banker Caine, generously sponsored Sully's Coffee Carts this year! From coffee to creamers to a variety of flavors, our staff had the opportunity to purchase coffee from our baristas in the high school classes. We couldn't have done it without you, Mrs. Heather! We deeply appreciated your incredible support!
