During the “Nineties”, the idea of fostering creativity to promote critical thinking and the use of engineering or technology in imaginative ways to solve real-world problems had started to spread lending the letter A for arts and architecture being added to the STEM acronym.

The arts and architectural studies, in all their various forms and related skills are critical components to innovation, and by incorporating them to complement the scientific approach will only strengthen the chances to success.

Artistic and design related skills will spark the imagination, produce more creative endeavours and bring about further innovation.

STEAM-based curricula have taken off in classrooms all across the country and for good reason: the building blocks of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture/Art, and Math) are fields in which it is vital for young learners to develop proficiency. Beyond the classroom, there’s an increasing demand for workers that have a strong foundation in STEAM knowledge.

Due to that demand, jobs in many STEM fields garner the highest earnings. These employees are well compensated because companies know that STEAM combines five diverse fields to create well-rounded, 21st-century learners that can think creatively and collaborate well with others.

Students are taught not only theoretical and academic concepts, but more importantly, real-world applications of their knowledge and skills. Even when it comes to abstract mathematical concepts, students can be taught how to apply them in real life situations, such as household budgeting for instance.

Computational and logical skills The integration of the arts in science-oriented curriculum enhances students’ computational and logical skills. Other factors are considered aside from technical aspects.

For example, when it comes to solving the problem of climate change, it requires a multidisciplinary approach but also includes significant socioeconomic and geopolitical considerations. Hence, “computation” must factor in other subtle and indirect variables when solving problems.

It can’t be overstated, especially when it comes to preparing students for the real world challenges. The integrated and holistic approach of STEAM education makes the students more adaptable to a wide range of situations and challenges.

This clever acronym was first introduced by the National Science Foundation. The need for STEAM education was a result of educators wanting to prepare the next generation of the global workforce, create relevant jobs, and boost the economy.
We know what you are thinking, though, “Haven’t these concepts and subjects been taught for decades?”
The answer is yes, but the STEAM curriculum has a different approach. Instead of teaching all concepts separately, STEAM education integrates them into one cohesive learning experience that is based on real-world applications. Brilliant, right!?

What is STEAM Education?

In 2006 researcher Georgette Yakman had the epiphany that STEM could be improved and enriched by the creativity of arts subjects. She added an “A” to STEM and STEAM was born. Like STEM, a STEAM curriculum combines all of those disciplines and comes with no solid definition or set standard on how to implement it.

Although people often compare STEM and STEAM, the addition of art creates a significant difference between the two. STEAM is more abstract than STEM. It includes everything from fine art and performance art to subjects such as photography and even English literature. Most importantly, it puts an emphasis on how we communicate and express STEM-related ideas.
