š¦ Kentucky mosquitoes are OUT. How are YOU protecting your pup? šæ
We all know heartworm is a real threat here in the Bluegrass (2,200+ cases a yearāyikes!). While vet-prescribed preventatives are the ONLY way to guarantee full protection, these holistic methods are fantastic as an extra layer of defense against those pesky biters!
Hereās your go-to natural mosquito playbook for dogs:
š” MANAGE YOUR YARD
⢠Dump standing water weeklyāflower pot saucers, bird baths, kiddie pools. Mosquitoes breed there!
⢠Plant a dog-safe garden that naturally repels these suckers:
Ā· Lavender (calming & pretty!)
Ā· Basil (lemon basil is top-tier)
Ā· Rosemary
Ā· Catnip (fun fact: up to 10x more effective than DEET!)
Ā· Lemon Balm & Peppermint
šæ DIY NATURAL SPRAYS (Patch test first! Avoid eyes/nose!)
⢠Apple C***r Vinegar Spray ā 1 part ACV + 2 parts distilled water. Spritz lightly before walks.
⢠Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) ā 1 part OLE + 10 parts witch hazel or sunflower oil. (CRUCIAL: Use CDC-recommended OLE, NOT lemon eucalyptus essential oil!)
⢠Essential Oil Blend ā 2 cups ACV + 1 cup water + 2 tbsp veggie oil + 15 drops lavender or cedarwood oil.
ā
Safe oils: Lavender (not if you have cats), Cedarwood, Citronella, Lemongrass (peppermint sparingly).
š« AVOID: Pennyroyal, Pine Oil, Tea Tree, Wintergreen, and high-concentration Citrus Oils.
š¾ COMMERCIAL NATURAL OPTIONS
Look for plant-based sprays like Wondercide or Vet's Bestāthey're great for quick touch-ups!
ā ļø A gentle reminder from your local animal wellness consultant: These holistic tricks repel mosquitoes, but they do NOT prevent heartworm larvae from taking hold. That takes a prescription from your vet!
š” Pro tip: While you're at the clinic picking up that prescription. Plan out some time for ice cream .. The holistic route takes daily repetition (life gets busy!), so having that reliable monthly chew plus your natural spray = peace of mind. And don't forget that annual heartworm testāit's a must!
