Speak EZ

Speak EZ Toastmasters is a place where you develop and grow - both personally and professionally. What is in it for you?

In light of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Toastmasters clubs around the world are holding online meetings. SPEAK EZ·FRIDAY, 1-22-21·
Toastmasters is a place where you develop and grow - both personally and professionally. You join a community of learners, and in Toastmasters meetings we learn by doing. Whether you're an executive or a stay-at-home parent, a college student or a retiree,

you will improve yourself; building skills to express yourself in a variety of situations. You'll open up a world of new possibilities: giving better work presentations; leading meetings - and participating in them - more confidently; speaking more smoothly off the cuff; even handling one-on-one interactions with family, friends and colleagues more positively.

With triple-digit days in the forecast, Speak EZ spent Thursday evening thinking about snow. Toastmaster Jerry C. built the whole meeting around a cold-weather theme, and the Word of the Day was "blizzard" — a welcome mental escape from the August heat, even if the word only turned up four times all night.

No prepared speaker was on the calendar, so the club did two things instead. First, an extended Table Topics round led by Susie D. on a winter-Olympics theme: Paul S. — on his birthday, no less — catalogued every body part that would ache after a downhill run, including a few not yet invented; Monnica R. designed a bedazzled, Flo-Jo-inspired figure-skating costume; Mark H. flatly refused to limit his snowball-fight team to three people; and our guest jumped right in with memories of rare Dallas snow days and snowballs her mom colored with cherry syrup.

Then Monnica R., joining on Zoom and a semifinal judge at this year's contest, shared the 2026 World Championship of Public Speaking winning speech — "Best Decision Ever" by Dirceu da Silva — and broke down what makes a championship speech land.

A warm welcome to Becky, visiting for the first time to watch her son Garrett S. in action. She said the night left her feeling "empowered" — we'd love to have her back.

Susie turned Speak EZ into a second grade classroom last night. She played "Miss Suzy," had us recite the club mission statement like a class pledge, and even called on a "student" to explain the timer's job.

Jerry gave the club an update on his second Distinguished Toastmaster project. He's spent twenty years in this organization, earned his first DTM back in 2011, and is now building the plan for a second. Part of that plan comes from a hard lesson: a crypto investment that went wrong a few years ago, which he's turning into a book to help other people avoid the same mistake. He also asked the room to help him decide where to focus next, whether that's his website, his poetry, or building up Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube.

Table Topics kept the school theme going with questions about favorite teachers and the best days in class. Word of the Day was gumption, and Carl worked it into nearly every question he asked.

Fall contest season is close. Area 14 starts October 10, with Eastern Division and District contests following in November.

Carl N. gave us a simple challenge at Speak EZ last night: start with gratitude, then let it change how you listen, respond, and treat the people around you.

His speech, “Gratitude Drives My Positive Attitude,” fit right in with our theme, “A Different Point of View.” The attached graphic captures his morning routine, his 30-day gratitude challenge, and the way gratitude can shift a reaction into understanding.

We also had Garrett S. leading Table Topics, Mark H. introducing the word “unorthodox,” Makenzie A. taking on her first meeting role, and Kristen S. guiding the evaluation portion of the meeting.

It was a good reminder that a meeting does not need to be packed with speeches to be useful. Sometimes one thoughtful speech gives everyone plenty to take home.

Here we go, SpeakEZ! 🎉

Last night's meeting proved that resilience isn't just a word — it's what this club is made of.

The theme Here We Go set the tone perfectly, and our members brought it to life with stories of break-ins that became home remodels, flat key fobs turned into chance connections, and a decades-long love story that started over a plate of shrimp.

Our two prepared speakers absolutely delivered:

🎤 Carl N. (Persuasive Influence, Level 1) asked the audience *"Who Am I as a Leader?"* — and answered it beautifully. Drawing on John Maxwell's Law of Influence, Carl traced his journey from "just a sales guy" to servant leader. His closing story brought the room to life: a simple gratitude text led, step by step, to an offer on a 100-year-old family business. *Last Thursday.* Fingers crossed, Carl!

🎤 Jerry C. (DTM) gave us a speech we won't soon forget. His acronym? GOALS — set to the tune of *Bingo*. G for God. O for Others. A for Ask. L for Love. S for Success. By the end, the whole room was singing along. Evaluator Paul S. said it best: "It was Jerry speaking — not just somebody giving a speech."

📣 Word of the Day — Resilient — was won by Paul S., who also landed the line of the night: "better than a bag of popcorn."

Grammarian Byron W. noted some standout phrases: Carl's "oozes out of them like an infectious disease," Kristen's "harebrained" (Byron's take: until age 11 he thought it meant hair growing into your brain), and Jerry's masterful use of repetition throughout.

Thank you to Toastmaster Kristen S. for anchoring the evening with heart — including a proud moment about her daughter Tessa's resilience — and to every member who made this meeting shine.

SpeakEZ meets Wednesdays at 6 PM CT. Come see what we're building. 💪

For the first time in sixty years, Distinguished Toastmaster Jerry had no guitar in his life. Not for a week. Not for a month. Two weeks — and then something happened at a pawn shop that he's calling a divine coincidence.

Thursday night at SpeakEZ, Jerry brought that guitar to the meeting and told us the whole story. A crypto loss, a son-in-law stepping in, an old phone traded for a guitar that had been sitting on a shelf for exactly one year. And that same night, a text from his nephew marking four years since his brother — the one who was there when Jerry first bought that guitar — had passed.

It was one of those speeches you don't forget.

Our theme was "Level Up" — inspired by two of our own, Kristen and Byron, who competed at the Area 14 contest on Saturday in front of about sixty people. (Kristen took second place in evaluation. We're proud of them both.)

Our Word of the Day was boost — as in, practice boosts confidence. Every single person in the room used it.

If you've ever hit a bottom you weren't sure you'd climb out of — or if you just want to be in a room where real stories get told — come find us.

SpeakEZ meets every Thursday at 6:00 PM. Join us on Zoom or in person.
