For the past several years, we've participated in the Prehospital Airway Control Trial (PACT) alongside the University of Pittsburgh, helping shape the future of airway management in emergency care.

This work represents more than research—it’s a promise to the communities we serve that the care we provide is rooted in evidence, driven by improvement, and focused on better patient outcomes.

We’re proud of the team and their continued commitment to delivering the highest standard of care.

Pitt County Recognizes National EMS Week May 17–23
Recognizing EMS professionals and their role in improving patient outcomes

PITT COUNTY, N.C. – The Pitt County Board of Commissioners will recognize the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team during National EMS Week at its Monday, May 18 meeting located in the County Administration Building located at 1717 West 5th Street, Greenville.

EMS Week is Sunday, May 17 through Saturday, 23, 2026. This year’s theme, “EMS Week: Improving Outcomes, Together,” highlights the coordinated efforts of emergency responders, healthcare providers and community partners who deliver timely, high-quality care.

“The Pitt County EMS system is comprised of multiple agencies that span from 911 operators and first responders to Paramedics and EMTs. EMS Week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication, skill and teamwork required to deliver emergency care. EMS professionals perform multiple roles in patient care and improving outcomes is a team effort,” says Jim McArthur, Emergency Management Deputy Director/EMS Coordinator.

EMS recently enhanced emergency patient care through new mobile medical technology, Sapphire IV infusion pumps, installed on its units. This technology improves accuracy, reduces dosing errors and supports better outcomes for patients of all ages.

“Our EMS professionals demonstrate compassion, expertise and resilience in every emergency call. By equipping teams with the right tools and training, we are strengthening outcomes for our community,” says Janis Gallagher, Pitt County Manager.

EMS is staffed by 32 full-time and 8 part-time paramedics, four senior paramedics who serve as assistant supervisors and two community paramedics. Four shift supervisors oversee the daily operations of the entire EMS system. EMS responded to 13,500 calls in 2025.

Emergency Medical Services was featured in ECU Health’s State Medical Assistance Teams (SMAT) partnership in local emergency response. Learn more at https://www.ecuhealth.org/ecu-health-medical-center-based-state-medical-assistance-team-fortifies-local-emergency-response.

In addition to emergency response, the Pitt County Community Paramedic Program provides in-home care to underserved residents and reduces non-emergency 911 calls.
