At Furman, the May Experience (MayX) gives professors the opportunity to create immersive, hands-on courses that wouldn't be possible during a traditional semester. Whether guiding students through the psychology behind magic, connecting public health concepts to real-world emergency medicine or building community through the culture and craft of barbecue, faculty are finding creative ways to bring learning to life.

What can we learn from some of the world’s most innovative education systems? 📚

During the International Perspectives on Education MayX, students traveled to Italy and Finland to experience two distinct approaches to teaching.
From Reggio Emilia’s emphasis on creativity and community to Finland’s model of trust, autonomy and educational equity, the course offered a firsthand look at how different cultures invest in early childhood education and the many ways learning can be fostered around the world. 🌍

May took students across the globe to explore new cultures, engage with experts, tackle real-world challenges and gain firsthand perspectives that can't be found in a textbook. From Europe to Asia to South America and beyond, every destination became an opportunity to learn and connect. 🌍💜

Students in “The Psychology of Magic” MayX course are exploring the cognitive science behind illusion through hands-on learning and a little sleight-of-hand. The course unravels how perception and storytelling come together to create magic. 🎩

Inside the EEG and Sleep Research Methods Bootcamp, students are stepping into the role of junior scientists, learning how to collect and analyze EEG data, apply electrodes, interpret brain activity and design real sleep research experiments of their own. This MayX immerses students in the world of sleep and cognitive neuroscience through hands-on research that brings the science of the brain to life. 🧠⚡️
