Another SAEM conference in the books. Our PGY2s had a great time in Atlanta last week between attending sessions, dodgeball, sonogames, and exploring the city!!

Up next in our graduation series, we have DR. RECH!!! Our sports queen and favorite baker. Our hearts and bellies will be empty without her.

Dr. Rech was drawn to EM for the fast pace, procedures, and the chance to see a little bit of everything—and quickly became someone who could handle all of it with skill and ease.

Known throughout the residency as the resident baker, Dr. Rech kept morale high one homemade treat at a time. Her baked goods are worthy of their own consult service.

From Blair, Nebraska → University of Nebraska Medical Center → to becoming a resident everyone loved working beside.

Some of the best memories happened outside the hospital - Oktoberfest at Snowbird during ACEP, SAEM after parties, and the kind of conference chaos that somehow always turns into lifelong memories.

Signature move: Arterial lines. Tiny target, huge satisfaction !!!

Next stop → Sports Medicine Fellowship at Standard Healthcare O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, CA

A little bit of everything - exactly how EM should be.

Up next in our graduation series, we have Dr. HEARN!!! We are so sad to see him go!

3 years of experience, wisdom, and reminding the rest of us that sometimes the old-school way still works best.

After starting out as a hospitalist, Dr. Hearn realized the ED was where he truly belonged. The pace, the pressure, the unpredictability - it felt like home. So he came back to residency and never looked back.

Known around the department for “being old and wise” with the occasional mustache, Dr. Hearn brought a steady presence and dry humor to every shift.

From Franklin Springs, GA → VCOM-VA → to becoming the resident everyone wanted nearby when things got critical.

Favorite memories include teaching Austin and Fahad how to perform a pericardiocentesis the old-school way.

Signature move: A crash chest tube 🩻

Next stop → St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia, GA working both EM and Hospitalist medicine

Proof that sometimes the long road leads exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Last week, Dr. Moore, Dr. Acra, and Dr. Cleveland attended the ACEP Leadership & Advocacy Conference alongside emergency physicians and leaders from across the country.

They participated in discussions on the issues currently shaping EM and directly impacting the care of our patients, our departments, and our communities. From workforce challenges to patient access and safety, they had the opportunity to learn from national and state leaders while collaborating on ways to advocate for the future of our specialty.

Our advocacy team continues to work on behalf of both physicians and patients at the national and state level. Here in South Carolina, they have been actively involved in efforts to strengthen protections for healthcare workers, including advocating for violence against healthcare workers to be recognized as a felony offense.

We are proud to have residents and faculty who continue to represent our program beyond the walls of the ED and work to advance emergency medicine through leadership, advocacy, and service.

Up next for his Final Dispo: Graduation, DR. GARRITY!!! We will miss him so much!

3 years of fast decisions, high patient volumes, and living just a little dangerously.

Dr. Garrity thrived in the pace and pressure of emergency medicine - the sicker the patient, the better. Known around the department as the discharge wizard, Dr. Garrity built a reputation for efficiency, confidence, and keeping the shifts moving.

From Pace, FL → William Carey University → to becoming one of the residents you could always count on when the department got slammed.

Some of the best memories came away from the hospital at Ridge Haven retreats, where the chaos slowed down just enough to spend time with the people who made residency unforgettable.

Biggest flex: Seeing more patients than Farhad (lol)

Signature move: Floating a pacer 🫀

Next stop → University of Tennessee Knoxville

Fast pace. Sick patients. Exactly where Dr. Garrity belongs.

The annual passing of the torch between our outgoing and incoming chiefs!! We want to give a big thank you to Austin, Avery, and Fahad for their incredible work this past year. Additionally we cannot wait to see all the great things Elise, Chris, and Emily accomplish over this next year as our new chiefs!!

On this episode of “Final Dispo: Graduation”, another senior we won’t have to say goodbye to just yet, DR. COUNTESS!!

3 years of showing up for people on their hardest days and never losing sight of why it matters.

Dr. Countess brought a rare presence to the ED: the ability to step into chaos, find clarity, and connect with patients in a way that made even the hardest moments feel human. Whether it was a critical decision or a quiet moment of reassurance, he understood that it all matters.

Known around the department as the “Captain of Close Counts,” Dr. Countess built a reputation for precision, presence, and always being in the right place at the right time.

From Tallahassee, FL → FSU COM → to becoming a steady, thoughtful force in the department, his impact goes far beyond procedures and shifts.

The moments that stick? Nights around the bonfire at Ridge Haven - laughing, unwinding, and being present with the people who made the journey what it was.

Signature move: after all this time? always intubations ⚡️

Next stop → Ultrasound Fellowship at Prisma Upstate

A constant reminder of the humanity in emergency medicine and the kind of physician patients never forget.

Up next for “Final Dispo: Graduation”, DR. BINGHAM!!

3 years of controlled chaos, a fully optimized schedule, and somehow making it all work (even if your request got denied 😅).

Dr. Bingham kept the department running both on and off the board—known as the scheduling guru (with a reputation for saying “no” lol), staying late to finish every last note, and powering entire shifts on ginger ale and Nerds clusters.

From Shreveport, Louisiana → LSU Health Shreveport → to becoming a steady and dependable presence in the ED, taking care of every patient who comes through the door—no matter who they are or what they need.

The memories? Game nights, Kiawah at the end of intern year, the legendary SAEM Philly pub crawl, night shift delirium that turned into lifelong friendships, and yes… a midnight Subway cookie that just hits different.

And somewhere along the way—realizing that what once took everything now feels like second nature (plus a little undercover ultrasound practice in the sim lab 👀 - we cannot wait meet baby Bingham!!).

Signature move: A clean arterial line

Next stop → Ultrasound Fellowship at Prisma

Schedules were managed, shifts were covered, and the vibes were unmatched.

We loved our time at ACOEP in Orlando meeting so many students and residents!!

Dr. Uddin PGY3 took the stage as a speaker, while Dr. Gentile PGY1 is serving as the ACOEP RSO President. Both representing our program at a national level in different ways. We’re proud to see our residents not only showing up, but leading, teaching, and making an impact.

Our program is incredibly supportive of the passions and interests of each resident and truly works to create opportunities tailored to us. They work with us to allow our schedules to include conference attendance, leadership involvement, research, and the chance to pursue what matters most to us.

To kick off our new series “Final Dispo: Graduation”, highlighting our tremendous third years as they work through their final months of residency, we have the lovely Dr. ACRA!

Known for balancing a wild board, running traumas like it’s second nature, and somehow still being the person everyone turns to for help—Dr. Acra made it all look easy. Off shift? Probably booking a flight ✈️ or finding the next dessert spot 🍰.

From Barboursville, WV → Joan C. Edwards SOM → international conference stages (as the closing presenter, no big deal) → building a mentorship program that will outlast residency… yeah, it’s been an incredible run.

Favorite moments weren’t just in the department—intern retreat, a house full of co-residents, and the kind of memories that stick.

Signature move: Dropping a chest tube like a pro!

Next stop → Attending at Prisma Health Greenville

Some people finish residency. Others leave a mark. Thanks for leaving big shoes to fill!
