It’s History Humpday in the Department of Physics! From 1909-1929, Herbert E. Austin worked to develop a science curriculum at East Carolina Training School, and then later worked as an administrator at the school. He is described as the Father of Sciences at ECU. The administration building was originally where Jenkins Building is today, and was the grandest building on campus at the time. Robert Wright, the president of the college, dedicated the building to Herbert Austin for all his hard work and years of service. In 1963, the general assembly of NC approved funding for a new classroom building to replace the “Old Austin” building, which is now the “New Austin” building. The “New Austin” was built where the old baseball field once was. The “Old Austin” building was demolished in 1968.

Our Physics Pirate Profile is Chris Garcia!

Our Physics Pirate Profile this week is Chris Garcia! Chris is a Physics PhD candidate at ECU. He has a lovely wife, two cats, and a dog. Chris can be easy going, but can be objective-oriented when he needs to be. Chris likes to do “nerdy things” like play video games and board games, but he also likes to meet new people and lift weights 💪🏻. “I have always been quite curious, so my favorite thing about physics is the understanding of the world that I get as I learn more about it. I can now explain to my younger self how my favorite magnet toy used to work, or how a stoplight can tell that’s someone is waiting for it to turn green.” Some of Chris’s goals are to earn his PhD and get a job, and then start a family with his wife! Chris has been ready to be a dad since he graduated high school, and he and his wife are about done waiting! A fun fact about Chris is that he had the opportunity to go to Antarctica with Dr. Regina DeWitt and her OSL Lab. Even if there aren’t any trips to Antarctica, there are usually conferences around the world to be invited to-pursuing research can be an avenue to explore the world! The Physics Department is so proud to have Chris on board!

It’s History Humpday in the Department of Physics! Here at ECU, Physics became a distinct unit in 1963. Previously, it was housed in the Department of Science which was comprised of biology, chemistry, physics, and science education. Physics was designated as a department in 1965/66, that was 56 years ago! The graduate program in Applied Physics was initiated in 1970, and in 1989 the Masters degree with a focus on Medical Physics was initiated! Our Physics Pirate Profile this week is alumni, Wilson Hawkins! Wilson is an Assistant Professor of Physics at Gardner-Webb University. He studied experimental 💪🏻 atomic physics at ECU and is now learning astronomy at GWU. Wilson says, “Phyisics is everywhere, from subatomic particles to distant galaxies! The ECU Department of Physics gave me the tools to teach students, design laboratory experiments, and manage research resources.” Gardner-Webb University is building a culture of science education around the Williams Ovservatory by promoting community observations, local club meetings, and undergraduate research. Wilson is most excited by weekend camping trips to the mountains for astrophotography and spectroscopy undergraduate research! We are so proud of Wilson and all his accomplishments!

Join us at Open House this Saturday, October 16th! You will have the opportunity to meet faculty members and be a part of the Particle Accelerator and lab tour. This is an event you don’t want to miss!
