We had our last week of Maine Woods Explorers for this summer: Adventure Week! Big thank you to Sarah & Annabelle for leading these kids through the woods and waters of the Moosehead Lake Region and making memories that will last all year long.

8/4/26
Today we visited Little Moose and hiked the loop trail. Along the way, we explored the different ponds and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. We had a great time admiring the pretty views, and spending the day outdoors.

8/5/26
Today we visited Mountain View Pond, where we spent the day kayaking and fishing. Everyone enjoyed being out on the water, and the kids had an especially great time catching frogs along the shoreline. It was a fun and relaxing day.

8/6/26
Last day of camp for the summer with a visit to Lily Bay State Park. Swimming and fun in the (hot) sun then a much deserved cold ice cream at the end of the day.

Let's catch up with the Maine Woods Explorers! Annabelle tells us about last week's adventures :)

We hiked Little Wilson Falls. Along the way, we took our time exploring the area and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Once we reached the top, we stopped to eat lunch while relaxing and watching the waterfall. After our hike back, we spent time doing art activities, including drawing and watercolor painting. Everyone found a peaceful spot to sit, create, and appreciate the beauty of nature.

We hiked to the Borestone Mountain Visitor Center, where we learned about the history of Borestone Mountain and the surrounding area. We also learned about the different wildlife found there and why those animals live in that habitat. On our way back, we stopped at Little Wilson Falls to swim, relax, and spend time together before wrapping up the day

We need at least 4 more high school aged youth for us to have our inaugural 'Outlet' overnight adventure camp August 10th-14th... whitewhite rafting, camping, hiking, and canoeing. SO we are waving the Piscataquis residency requirement and opening up the camp to our neighboring counties too! Sign up by August 1st at https://form.jotform.com/nrecmoosehead/2026-hs-outlet-registration-form

NEW PROGRAM ALERT! This is NREC Moosehead's first foray into an overnight adventure program for local rural Piscataquis County High School students! Brainchild of our new Educator, Sarah Hubert; hiking, whitewater rafting with Northeast Whitewater, canoeing on Moosehead, camping, and packraft with packraftmaine!

By navigating the woods and water trails of the Moosehead Lake Region, participants develop resilience, teamwork, and self-reliance. A trip of a lifetime that these teens will always remember.

A comparable camp would normally be close to a grand but through volunteer grant writing by the board and members like YOU, we are offering this camp for only $200 for NREC members and $250 for nonmembers. Scholarships available, email [email protected] with questions.

Maine Woods Explorers update from our Summer Intern, Annabelle Peakes!

This week our campers have been busy exploring everything the Moosehead region has to offer!

On Tuesday, we took a hiking trip to Big Moose Mountain in Greenville to learn about its history. We started by visiting the fire watchmen’s camp, where we learned about the lives of the people who worked in Maine's forests. We also explored the original Big Moose Mountain fire tower and a replica of an old fire camp at the visitors center. During our hike, the weather made the trail a little more challenging, but it added to the adventure.

Wednesday morning started with kayaking and fishing at Mountain view pond. After our kayaking, we headed to Moosehead Lake to get on the Katahdin. As we traveled across the beautiful lake, we learned facts about the area's history, wildlife, and the people who have lived and worked there over the years. During the boat ride we kept ourselves entertained by playing games together. One of the coolest parts of the day was getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the Katahdin's engine room. We saw the giant engines that power the boat and learned what happens below deck to keep everything running smoothly.
