Dr. John Collins, associate professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, is serving as a Faculty Fellow of the North Carolina branch of Integrating Civil Discourse into the Curriculum (ICDC) and as a Faculty Fellow in the national branch, as part of the $4 million U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education initiative. The UNC System is the first university system in the country to join, with a fellow on each of the 17 campuses.

This summer, students traveled to coastal field sites, deployed scientific sensors, collected soil and water data, and worked alongside faculty to investigate a problem threatening North Carolina farms and ecosystems: saltwater intrusion. Nearly 17 years ago, Gloria Steinem was here at East Carolina University to present a talk titled "Reflections on Feminism" to share her reflections on a lifetime spent revolutionizing modern journalism and advocating for civil and women’s rights.

Steinem spoke as part of the then (relatively) new Voyages of Discovery series presented by the ECU Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences on Nov. 6, 2009, to a sold-out audience in Wright Auditorium.
