Strong communities start with strong local leaders. The Neighborhood Leadership Academy is a 10-week online leadership development course that helps residents gain the skills, connections and resources needed to create positive change in their neighborhoods and communities. The program runs Sept. 8 through Nov. 12 and is available to participants across Missouri.

Participants build skills in community engagement, project planning, organizational leadership, fundraising and personal leadership development, then apply what they learn through a community improvement project focused on local needs. More than 700 community leaders have completed the program.

Whether you're involved with a neighborhood association, nonprofit, school, local government or simply want to make a difference where you live, this program can help you turn ideas into action and strengthen your community.

MU Extension’s w**d science team is studying the soil w**d seed bank across Missouri to better understand and reduce populations of troublesome w**ds such as waterhemp and Palmer amaranth. Researchers have already identified 52 w**d species in samples collected from 29 counties. Waterhemp, one of the most challenging and herbicide-resistant w**ds affecting row crops, was the most common summer annual found.

By learning more about the density and diversity of w**d seeds in Missouri cropland, researchers hope to develop better strategies to help producers protect yields and manage w**ds more effectively.

Spending time outdoors this summer? Whether you're working, exercising or enjoying time with family and friends, don't let heat cramps catch you off guard.

Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms that can occur when heavy sweating causes your body to lose fluids, salt and other important electrolytes.

If heat cramps strike:
• Stop activity and move to a cool, shaded area.
• Gently stretch and massage the affected muscle.
• Sip water or a sports drink to help replace lost fluids and electrolytes.

Taking regular breaks, staying hydrated and avoiding overexertion during the hottest parts of the day can help prevent heat cramps before they start. Stay safe and listen to your body this summer.
