In a typical Music Adventure we run through a variety of activities tailored to your event. Guided improvisation and exploration of instruments such as keyboard, guitar, ukulele, banjo, autoharp, dulcimer, saxophone, drums, various percussion and fascinating rare instruments like a can-jo, box drum or sandwich flute. We may venture through the jungle, ocean, mountains, ponds and outer space to name a few. Puppets, simple scenery and imagination bring to life a world where children are exposed to the elements of music. At age appropriate levels, children begin to learn about music theory. Music Adventurers are presented with opportunities to develop and practice gross and fine motor skills, body awareness, coordination, social skills, ear training, tactile exposure, experimentation, problem solving, math and reading skills as well as other academic basics all while developing a wonderful creative outlet. Many of you already know that I am a performing musician around the Upstate. I play Americana (folk, country, bluegrass, rock) music geared towards adults and children. I have studied music since I was very young starting formal lessons in piano in the 5th grade, saxophone in middle school, music theory at the Fine Arts Center of Greenville in high school, guitar and voice in college and am self taught in many other instruments such as banjo, ukulele and dulcimer. I have a degree in Music Therapy from Loyola University New Orleans and over 20 years experience working with children through the delightful world of music. I started working with kids while I was still a kid with countless nanny and babysitting jobs since I was 12 years old. My first job out of college was as a teacher's assistant and music leader at the Meyer Center for Children with Special Needs. This was before they had a music therapist position on their staff. Much of my work for a good 10 years was with children with special needs through places like Camp Spearhead here in South Carolina and Harvest Park Preschool in Pleasanton, CA for children on the autism spectrum. In Greenville I also worked as an in-home tutor for Educational Consulting Services using the ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) programs that have been very successful in the autism field. Through my training I've gained a lot of helpful experience. Music Adventure sessions are not music therapy sessions but they do tend to reflect the improvisational style that I developed working in therapy settings. After 6 years of touring around the country with my music based out of the Bay Area in California. In 2010 I moved back to Greenville, SC, the city where I was born and grew up. . When I first got back I started a nanny job for 3 amazing kids who have since outgrown their need for me. I started doing music activities at birthday parties for extra income and about that time I had several parents ask when I was going to start my own regular classes for kids using my own unique style. Thus Music Adventure was born in June of 2014. Most recently I was the the music teacher at the Montessori School of Mauldin, Mountain Montessori, Upstate Montessori and Disciples CDC and had about 35 weekly private students in piano and guitar. I took a motherhood break that I was just coming back from when Covid changed the world. I have recently started back again with one simple Music Adventure group for kids in the Pre-k through early elementary age range. Maybe more in the Spring. I'm hoping to start back private lessons in the Fall of 2022. Thanks for taking the time to learn a little more about me and the business I'm trying to build. This is an evolving process. I'm learning about business as I go. Fortunately Greenville has some good resources and I've had helpful suggestions and thoughts from many awesome people. I'm always interested in your thoughts.
