Furman to build new residence hall, renovate four others - Furman News 01/15/2022

This spring, Furman University will begin its largest construction project to date, a comprehensive renovation of South Housing that will include building a new residence hall and updating four others in the complex devoted to first-year students.

The project will replace the current Blackwell Hall, relocate the Center for Inclusive Communities into the new hall, and introduce a host of modern amenities in the new and existing halls designed to support student success and belonging, enhancing the first-year experience for Furman students. A groundbreaking for the project will take place on Feb. 12.

Sad news

Dear Furman Community, it is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of former University Chaplain, Dr. Jim Pitts (‘60) from COIVD complications. After graduating Furman, Jim came back as Assistant Chaplain in 1967, became the University Chaplain in 1981, and retired in 2003. Jim’s tenure at Furman over the years was dotted with issues like the first social dance on campus, integration, race relations, the SSOC, Student Protest Era, Vietnam, and the draft lottery. He was instrumental in the development of the Furman Civil Rights Tour and hosting Billy Graham, Jimmy Carter, John Kerry, and Benjamin Mays on campus. Furman is uniquely indebted to his work helping to navigate the university through the separation from the Baptist Convention of South Carolina.

Jim was a passionate Furman supporter, elephantine in his institutional memory, and a man of deep faith. He will be missed.
