When I discovered Jazz around age sixteen, I was immediately hooked. What fascinated me as much as the music itself was the possibility of freedom of expression. It’s an idea that’s built for an idealistic teenager who’s read a lot of books. Even though I may have been gazing at the stars a little at that point, something important occurred to me. Freedom comes from self-discipline. You have to have something to express before you can express it. You have to have a language for the expression. There’s a lot more to it than just sitting down at the piano and letting it rip. There is a lot to learn, and no shortcuts.

Greenville friends, I play weekly at The Westin Poinsett downtown, Wednesday-Friday, 5:30-8:30, and 9:30 on Friday. The vibe is relaxed; good food and drinks, an attentive staff, and great music. Playing for friends and family, and interesting travelers. What a great opportunity to share music. Come see us!

This tune is one I wrote for my granddaughter, Murphy Elizabeth. She will be one year old this week. Hard to believe. She is growing so fast, and just started walking in the last couple of weeks. She is a real beauty, always smiling, until you change her diaper! I’ve been taking her swimming some. She loves it.

Studio One is the audio software that I’m learning. I’m so psyched about it. If you get sick of me sharing tunes and attempts at tunes here, please blame my two friends that turned me on to this and have been helping me learn it, Jim & Dave. They also sell ice cream….But seriously, I’ll never make fun of trombone players again, guys, at least not until the next opportunity.

Ron Brendle and I recently played a duo concert at the house of one of my students here in town. The crowd was small but mighty. They were there to listen, and we came to play. We played a lot of my tunes and we engaged in discussion with the audience. It was a fine time! Ron always brings the groove. So cool!
