Vulcan Materials Company has provided financial support for schools located in high poverty communities in the Upstate to attend Roper Mountain free of charge, and has been actively involved in our STEM Days of Summer program. Their support helps us further our vision of becoming a national leader in science education and fulfill our mission to ignite the natural curiosity of all learners to explore and shape their world.

A new month is here, and a whole new lineup of shows have arrived on the mountain! Join us Fridays at 4:30, 6, or 7:30 p.m. for an immersive, out of this world experience!
4:30 p.m. feature show, Cosmic Adventure: This high speed adventure for family audiences takes you on a roller coaster ride from the moon through our solar system, galaxy, and beyond. You’ll be immersed in some of the most amazing sites in the universe. It’s a ride you will want to take again and again. Narrated by Nancy Cartwright of TV’s The Simpsons.
6 p.m. feature show, Solar Superstorms: Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, this show takes viewers into the tangle of magnetic fields and superhot plasma that vent the sun's rage in dramatic flares, violent solar tornadoes, and the largest eruptions in the solar system - coronal mass ejections. Audiences will witness a fury building on the surface of the sun – high-velocity jets, a fiery tsunami wave that reaches 100,000 kilometers high, and rising loops of electrified gas. What's driving these strange phenomena? How will they affect Earth? Find the answers as we venture into the seething interior of our star.
7:30 p.m. feature show, A Race Through Space: Embark on a live, interactive journey through the solar system! Travel from the blazing surface of the sun to the icy reaches of Pluto, encountering planets, moons, and dwarf planets along the way. Guided by a live narrator and brought to life with stunning dome visuals, this immersive show reveals fascinating facts, surprising stories, and cosmic connections that make our celestial neighborhood come alive. From standing in the shadow of Saturn’s rings to exploring the wonders of distant worlds, experience the solar system like never before.

It takes many helping hands to keep our farm thriving, and we're grateful for every volunteer who gives their time and talents. This month, we'd like to shine a spotlight on two wonderful members of our volunteer family—Stephanie and Lilia.
Every week, Stephanie can be found in the barn caring for our animals. From feeding them to cleaning stalls, she happily tackles one of the farm's messiest jobs with a smile. Her favorite part of the day is taking Larry, our lovable sheep, on a walk so he can munch on some of his favorite weeds. Stephanie's dependability, strong work ethic, and love for the animals make her an invaluable part of our farm.
Lilia first joined us through our Connections Café partnership with Greenville County Schools and now shares her talents in our Heritage Garden. Whether she's weeding, planting, harvesting, or helping wherever she's needed, Lilia approaches every task with enthusiasm and care. Thanks to her hard work, our fruits and vegetables are flourishing.
We are proud to have a diverse group of volunteers with a wide range of strengths, talents, and experiences—from corporate groups spending a day of service to dedicated weekly volunteers like Stephanie and Lilia. Their kindness, commitment, and willingness to pitch in to help make our farm a special place. We are so thankful to have them as part of our community.

Bosch USA has provided support for a number of exhibits around the mountain, including the Island Classroom, axolotl exhibit, and Hall of Giants in Harrison Hall. This year, they provided support for new pre- and post-visit resources for teachers, which are available on our website. Summer on the mountain may be over, but we're hard at work planning and preparing for our after school public programming, Afternoon Explorations. We can't wait to welcome you back on the mountain Thursday and Friday afternoons starting Thursday, Sept. 17.

Our monthly volunteer spotlight goes to the amazing Ava Becerra! Ava has been a volunteer at Roper Mountain since June 2024 and has over 470 service hours! We asked Ava some questions about her time here, and here's what she had to say.

Why did you want to volunteer at Roper Mountain?
I wanted to start volunteering at Roper Mountain because I went to Roper Mountain as a kid all the time and the volunteers and staff always made the experience incredible! I wanted to help make other kids and adults have the same incredible experience that I had, when I was a kid at Roper Mountain.
What is your favorite part about volunteering at Roper Mountain?
My favorite part about volunteering is getting to help people learn more about the animals around us. I love being able to see the amazement on their faces when I tell them a cool fact about an animal, or when I'm holding an animal and I get to see the excitement on their faces as they rush towards me to see that animal! I have also really enjoyed the friendships that I have made with both staff and volunteers over the years.
What are your future career plans and has this volunteer role helped you in that area of your life?
My future career plan is to go into a field of wildlife conservation! Volunteering at Roper Mountain has helped me so much in that area. I have been able to work on my communication skills by informing and educating people of all ages on wildlife that is around us, see how certain animals are taken care of and being able to handle those animals, and understand why it is so important that we take care of the wildlife and environment around us. I am so thankful for the opportunities that Roper Mountain has given me!

We are so incredibly grateful for Ava and for all of our volunteers that help to make Roper Mountain what it is. We couldn't do it without them!
