GES has began a brand new school garden. The students (K-6) have assisted in planting, weeding, and tending to the garden.

Students are learning first-hand how hard work prospers. We are in affiliation with the Wayne County 4-H Club!

The Garden Club kiddos had a great time decorating the front of the school for fall. We want to give a big THANK YOU to Larry Allen for the donation of pumpkins and corn stalks to make this possible! You are awesome! 🍁🌽🎃

It was a successful morning working in the GES Garden! We miss our sweet Mrs. Cindy dearly, but took what she taught all of us and got to work planting a fall garden that she had planned for us. ❤️🐻🐾🌱

French fry day was great. Mr Larry, myself and several of the garden club students helped in making this day a success. These are several experiments. I brought the same varieties of potatoes that we grew.
1. The home growns were heavier than store bought. Because of the higher water content.
2. When using a potato cutter the homegrowns were way more harder to get thru the cutter.
3. Taste test of raw potatoes homegrowns were better hands down.
4. The cooked potatoes again homegrowns had much better flavor and texture.
5. It was such a great that the kids realized that when you grow your own food you know what is used to grow them and preserve them.
6. They were so proud to experience the hard work of growing a garden and how that work brought forth a great tasting potato.
7. They were able to share and this information and great tasting French fries as well as serving the fries to all the teacher, staff and students.

I couldn’t be prouder.

Thursday we were able to do many experiments involving the potato we grew in grow bags. Now these bags weren’t big ones but we were able to grow a lb or so in each one. The kids loved harvesting them! After they were harvested we got them cleaned up and let them cure. The kids were amazed at how tender the skins were and learned about the curing process.

We have been having a good time during summer school this year. Most of our classes have been coming out to the garden to help and observe. The after school garden club will be meeting Thursday right after school. You don’t have to be going to summer school to come to the meeting. Here are some photos over the past couple of weeks.

Working in the garden this evening, we have baby tomatoes, all cucumbers have germinated and are doing great. The potatoe bags are growing. It is amazing what rain water does for the garden!
