Getting sober can remove the alcohol or drugs from the relationship—but it doesn’t automatically remove the resentment, hurt, mistrust, or unfairness that built up while the addiction was happening.
Sometimes that becomes really confusing.
The person in recovery is thinking, *“I changed. Why are you still treating me like I’m the problem?”*
Meanwhile, their partner or family member is thinking, *“After everything that happened, how are YOU angry at ME?”*
In today’s live, we’re talking about the resentment nobody talks about in recovery—and why seemingly small things can trigger surprisingly big reactions.
We’ll cover:
• Why sobriety doesn’t automatically repair a relationship
• The “emotional ledger” both people may still be carrying
• Why perceived unfairness can become such a powerful trigger
• How couples get stuck arguing about whose version of the past is correct
• Why the current argument may not actually be about what’s happening right now
• The difference between an alcohol/craving trigger and a resentment, trust, threat, or identity trigger
• How to stop organizing the relationship around who everyone was during the addiction
Because sometimes the w**e glass, the late arrival, the question, or the comment isn’t really the problem.
It’s what that thing has come to **mean**.
And until you understand that part, it’s very easy for both people to keep fighting the wrong battle.
