MS student, Jewel Relador, conducts her trial runs in preparation for her data collection this summer for her thesis on heat stress.

Dr. Guy Iverson recently received a new grant funding of $231,230 from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) for his project titled, “Freedom from Urban Runoff: Improving Stormwater Management at Andrew A. Best Freedom Park”. This project will fund the installation of 2 bioretention cells (or rain gardens) that receive stormwater runoff from the parking lot and some walkways. Through this project, ECU researchers and project stakeholders will also seek education and outreach opportunities to share the importance of stormwater management. This project also builds on previous projects that successfully improved water quality in the Greens Mill Run (GMR) Watershed, including the Jaycee Park Wetland, ECU Athletic Building Wetland, ECU Carol Belk Building Wetland, and ECU 14th St Rain Gardens and Permeable Pavement. Congratulations!

Dr. Stephanie Richards was recognized last week at the 2026 ECU Research and Scholarship Awards Recognition Ceremony and Celebration for the U.S. Patent awarded to her team’s wind tunnel invention. Dr. Richards and her co-inventor, Dr. Sinan Sousan, were awarded with a plaque to celebrate their achievement. Congratulations!

Madison Matchlet (Craven County Environmental Health Program Specialist) and Jenna Hinton (Registered Environmental Health Specialist) (two ladies in the middle) served as guest speakers in the Food Sanitation course. Quin Dickens (leftmost) and Briel Crespo (rightmost) are environmental health students enrolled in the course. The day-to-day work schedule of environmental health specialist were discussed, including complaint investigations, inspections of food establishments, food trucks, and local confinement facilities. Emphasis was placed on effective communication between industry and environmental health specialist.

Dr. Jo Anne Balanay gave an invited research presentation yesterday titled “Occupational Noise Exposures of Ushers during National Hockey League (NHL) Games in an Indoor Arena” during the quarterly meeting of the Triangle Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Group held at Terracon in Raleigh, NC. The study she presented was derived from the thesis project of MS Environmental Health alumna, Samantha Curtis. This study investigated the occupational noise exposure of ushers working during hockey home games of the Carolina Hurricanes in eastern North Carolina.

Dr. Stephanie Richards and her co-inventor, Dr. Sinan Sousan (ECU Department of Public Health), were officially awarded today a U.S. Patent (US20250389613A1) for their wind tunnel invention that is used to assess the effectiveness of insecticide products for mosquito control. Congratulations on this great achievement, Dr. Richards and Dr. Sousan!

During last week’s “Pirates Aboard”, which is ECU’s Admitted Student Day, new students met current students and professors, and dove into their intended majors. Several BS students attended the event. Welcome, new pirates! 🏴☠️
