On September 11, 2001, our nation was forever changed when terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners in a series of attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people.
For those who lived through that day, many can still remember exactly where they were and what they were doing as the events unfolded.
Through our ongoing research into Hempfield Area history for the Alumni Group and Alumni Archive, we have discovered several connections between members of the Hempfield community and the events of September 11, 2001.
Some of those connections were close to home, while others tied members of our Spartan community directly to the events and their aftermath. Together, they tell a small part of Hempfield’s story from a day that affected communities across the country.
As we continue working to preserve our district’s history, we know there may be other stories that have never been documented.
