70 Years of Spartan Pride 💙🤍

The 2026/27 school year marks 70 calendar years since the first Spartans walked the halls of the Big H!

While 2026/27 is technically HAHS’s 71st school year, and the school district itself was officially formed in 1952, we want to take some time throughout this year to celebrate the last 70 years of Hempfield history and Spartan Pride.

Throughout the school year, we’ll be sharing some fun facts and interesting information from the very first school year in 1956/57.

But before we get to that first year, we have to go back a little further.

Before There Was HAHS…

The first move to establish a high school occurred on June 8, 1898. The minutes of the Board of Education for the township recorded a proposal to investigate the possibilities of building a secondary school in our area.

From that time until 1956, students attended neighboring high schools.

On November 17, 1952, articles of agreement for the Hempfield Area Joint Schools, now known as the Hempfield Area School District, were adopted. Work then began in earnest to establish a high school.

The size and capacity of the senior high school were determined by a review of the student population as of 1952 and projected six years into the future. The board recognized potential growth, and the building was planned to provide additions as needed in the future.

Approximately 57 years after that first proposal, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new high school was held on a cold and rainy afternoon on Monday, February 28, 1955.

As construction of HAHS moved forward, students continued attending neighboring high schools until the new school was ready to welcome its first students for the 1956/57 school year.

And that was only the beginning…

Throughout this anniversary year, we look forward to sharing more about that first school year.

We hope these posts bring back memories for our longtime Spartans while giving newer generations a chance to discover pieces of HASD history they may have never known.

Here’s to 70 Years of Spartan Pride, and all the Spartans who have been part of the story

Hail Hempfield 💙🤍

A huge thank you to the HAHS Class of 1961 and HAHS Class of 1966 for inviting us to be part of your reunions on August 15!

One of our favorite parts of attending class reunions is watching the memories come flooding back as alumni look through items from our archive. We love hearing the stories, seeing old classmates reminisce, and getting to share pieces of Hempfield history with the people who lived it.

A special shoutout and thank you to Jayne Campbell, HAHS ’86, for manning our archive table at the Class of 1961 reunion! Jayne had an extra special connection to the class, as her late aunt and uncle are both members of HAHS ’61, making it especially fitting to have her there helping us share those memories.

And we’re not done yet! As of this post, we have two more reunions coming up in 2026:

🎓 HAHS Class of 2010 “Sweet 16” Reunion at the end August
🎓 HAHS Class of 1971 55th Reunion in October

We can’t wait to celebrate with both classes and share pieces of Hempfield history from their years as Spartans!

Hail Hempfield 💙🤍

A huge shoutout and thank you to the HAHS Class of 2006 for inviting us to be part of your 20th reunion!

As always, it was a pleasure getting to share pieces of Hempfield history from our archive and, even more importantly, hearing the stories and memories you shared from your years as Hempfield students.

Thank you for allowing us to help make your reunion a little more nostalgic and for helping us continue our mission of preserving Hempfield history for future generations of Spartans!

📚 New Additions to the Alumni Archive!

Today’s estate sale in the Wendover neighborhood led to the discovery of three wonderful pieces of Hempfield history, two Wendover mugs and one Fort Allen mug! ☕💙

These mugs date from a fascinating chapter in Hempfield’s history, before the Spartan mascot and the royal blue and silver colors were adopted district-wide. During the district’s first several decades, each school had its own mascot and colors, making memorabilia like this a unique reminder of Hempfield’s early identity and the traditions that existed before the district unified under the Spartan.

A huge thank you to Kim and Reclaimed Memories LLC for helping us acquire these incredible additions to the archive.

If you or someone you know has Hempfield-related memorabilia you’d like to donate, we’d love to hear from you! Send us a message on social media or email us at [email protected]

Together, we’re preserving Hempfield’s past, celebrating its present, and ensuring its history is remembered for generations to come.

Hail Hempfield 💙🤍
