Sometimes schools need fewer microscopes and more mirrors.
We can take one interaction with a student, zoom all the way in, and turn it into a judgment about who that child is.
I’ve seen words like defiant, disrespectful, and disruptive become weapons because they depend so heavily on adult interpretation.
What actually happened?
That’s different from asking how the adult felt about what happened.
When we confuse the two, discipline gets personal. Now we’re trying to win an argument instead of helping a kid learn from a moment and get back on track.
Put down the microscope.
Pick up the mirror.
Figure out where we’re trying to go and invite the student into finding the way forward.
Our job is still to cultivate their genius.
Fix the System, Not the Student.
